Hobbled and Sleepless

Our car repair garage isn't a fully-fledged garage that can do repairs all sorts, but they change my tires and do oil changes, spark plugs and little things.

It's only a mile or so away, so it's very handy for me. On the other hand, my dadblasted foot has made it a problematic mile in the past few years, so I must make arrangements to get back and forth if it becomes necessary to leave o car for a long time.

I don't mind waiting while they do a small job, but without going into unnecessary details, let me tell you that this appointment would require a full day, and I would, therefore, have to leave the car and return for it at the end of the day.

My solution was to call on Good Ole Bob who has helped me out this way before and would be willing to do it again.

All set, then . . . that is until Bob managed to get into an accident and wreck his car, and I had to devise a new plan.

Shauna could take me back to pick the car up at day's end, but I might have to walk home first. Surely, I could drag my foot that far if need be. I'd rather not, and certainly wouldn't want to do it twice in one day. If needs must, however, surely I could make it once.

Then, I devised a strategy for getting the garage folk to drive back home. I would walk in with my cane, look pathetic, and beg for help.

It worked. They took me home. Shauna drove me back at day's end.

Solved.

Not solved.

They were able to work their way through my list but decided that I required new spark plugs. Not being a full repair centre, they would have to bring them in. There was also another item on my list – restoring the covers of my headlights that had become very clouded. That treatment would take a full day.

We made arrangements, and my back and forth plans would remain the same – get them to drive me home and get Shauna to get me back there.

However, wen the day dawned, it didn't really dawn. The treatment to restore the clouded light-covers required the car to sit in sunlight for quite a duration, and there was little sun to be seen on that day.

It would only take an hour or so to do the spark plugs so I just waited there. We looked at the forecast for a sunny day for the headlight treatment, but it wasn't promising.

But when I awoke the next day – yesterday – I saw sun. I checked the forecast, and it looked like there would be enough sun all day to do the treatment. I took the car in. They drove me home. I texted Shauna for a ride back after work. Darn! She couldn't get me there before closing time.

What now?

Well, I decided that I would walk down for the pickup.

As the day progressed, I had second thoughts. What if I got halfway there and found that the pain was too bad to continue? But since I'd be halfway there, I would be stuck in no-man's-land as it were.

I called the garage, asked them to leave the car out for me to pick up after closing hour. Shauna would get me there late. I'd get the car and return the next day to settle the account.

And here I am. It is the next day but very early, for as has been typical of late, I only got 4 hours of sleep before beginning to toss and turn. As I have written recently, sometimes moving over to the recliner helps, so I made the move at 2:30. Last night the move didn't help; restlessness plus cramps got me up an hour later.

It's 5:30 now. I have totally rewritten my first draft into what you have read above, but I can't tell if it makes any sense, for I am done. I am sure that it must be an unsatisfactory, plodding pile of banality, but it is what it is, and I can hardly think, never mind rewrite it one more time.

I may get back to you tomorrow, bit now I must look for toothpicks to hold my eyelids open – for I know that I won't be going back to sleep for quite awhile yet.

Quite a headache.

No uber?

Fortunately, my local garage is quite happy to drive me back home and let me pay via credit card over the phone and pick it up after hours. For the minor stuff, I just take a book and wait them out. Once, when a repair was taking way longer than they expected, they actually loaned me their parts van so I could go pick up the kiddos from school who were less than thrilled to be seen getting into it.

For being foggy-minded you wrote/rewrote this post fairly well. Sorry to hear you still aren't sleeping. Should you be giving up on caffeine?

Our solution for car repair dance is to borrow a car from daughter or have one of them schlep us home or back.

It's definitely a quandry. And I understood where you were all through your explanation of events. What a headache! I just have the same problem, especially with rides from friends who work different hours. Fortunately there's a lovely coffee shop just down the way from my favorite mechanic...with wi-fi of course and air conditioned...so I wait for rides there with my laptop.

Gosh, what a mess you're dealing with. Hope it all ends well, though, and I do hope your leg (foot?) gets better soon. I think you wrote this quite well, actually.

So sorry your foot is such a problem. Logistics around cars are always such a pain. I often just take reading material and a snack and wait, dull but simpler.

My son had a problem with the clouded headlight covers and he used toothpaste and buffed them away. Success, now they are clear and bright and saved him some money. Next time give it a try.

Insomnia is quite a problem for me lately too. I can sit down on the couch to watch a television program, doze off for the entire thing, use all my willpower to wake up enough to get up, get my teeth brushed, climb into my jammies and get into bed...where I lay wide awake for a couple hours. I don't toss and turn. My mind just spins merrily on and on.

It is so unhandy having work done of the vehicle. Our daughter’s days off on shift work are helpful to us. Aging and sleeping regular hours are incompatible!

My garage is right across the street from me which is wonderful. I find putting CBC radio on puts me to sleep in a few minutes.

What a headache! I hate these super complicated appointments that turn into more and require too many moving (literally!) parts. I hope you can get some rest!

That lack of sleep is a killer, especially when there are other stresses on your mind (which probably didn't help the sleep either.) Bummer about your friend (hope he's OK) and the accident and all the ensuing complications. I feel for your foot. My tendon ruptured when I was in England with plenty of walking to do and far more pain than I'd ever had in a foot before -- and there you are, out and stuck -- especially if you don't want to just sit in the hotel! I hope yours will be better soon. Do you know what the cause is? Is it "fixable"?

Transportation can be quite an ordeal. I hope it is all sorted out now and you can get some sleep.

Well, I know the feeling about leaving cars some place. Fortunately now the dealer has a courtesy car and we are driven home and picked up.

I think it makes sense, but did you get your pickup back?

Somehow my children substituted potato chips for tooth picks, so we always said holding your eyes open with potato chips!

You are quite lucid for being sleep deprived. And car stuff is the worst! My Ford is nagging me to get its oil changed, so I guess I am in for another session with a book, a drink and a numb bum. I have an half hour drive to the dealer, so there I stay.
JG is having sleep issues too, and is blaming his mix of meds. Any chance you are having a like problem?

Like the Pope and The Queen, you and I are experiencing limited mobility. Too bad we don't have their resources and those cute little golf cart things.

Hope the mechanic or the doc can help your foot! For just one mile, you could try your old skateboard, or get one of those golf carts! I've waited for my car while it was at the shop, but I have an amazing angel of a car mechanic. I'd rent a car if I knew he'd need it longer, so that decreased the stress for both of us. If you rent from Enterprise, they come pick you up from the mechanic or home, take you to their facility, give you their car, then you do the reverse when you need to fetch your car. No extra fees for the pick up and delivery. For me, that's a real service for a single, working Mom. Good luck with everything. Linda in Kansas
