The Contraceptive Issue

Almost at the same time, I came across two posts about contraceptive availability, one about Virginia and the other about Canada.

There was this one from MTN (click the link for the whole article..

Then, I saw this one from the Canadian government.

This was part of the article.

“Women should have the autonomy to make their own choices about their health and their bodies. Our plan to make common contraceptives free—like birth control pills and IUDs, and even emergency contraception—will mean that, for nine million Canadian women, freedom of choice will be truly ‘free.’ And it means more Canadian women will have freedom of choice over their bodies and their lives.”

- The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance

This isn't just a Canada/US thing but very much about liberals and conservatives. Canadian conservatives would not do this either; they would not be socially proactive, just economically reactive. I am sure that they will soon come out against free contraceptives. In fact, they would prefer to take away things such as access to abortion and free health care in general.

Canadians have enjoyed free doctor and hospital care from decades now, and liberals have recently provided many seniors, such as me, with dental coverage. When I think of the various benefits that Canadians enjoy, I cannot think of one that was provided by conservatives.

Upon reflection, I take it back. They do like to cut corporate taxes.

  3. I agree with everything you said. To me, conservative thinking only benefits the wealthy. And about women's freedom of choice, don't get me started, lol! I want my granddaughters to have that freedom, and it angers me that the decision is taken out of their hands by groups of mainly old rich white men. Bah!

  4. I don't like to call them conservatives, as there is nothing conservative about them. They are extremists. But it's the recognized terminology, so what are you gonna do? I bet they would pay for chastity belts.

  5. Be prepared! If the wrong guy wins the next US election, they'll be more folks moving to your sensible Canada! Linda in Kansas

  6. I swear, sometimes I really wish we'd moved to Canada when we left Florida. We actually considered it but the distance from family and the long winters were too daunting. I love our NC home but the politics in this country are scary.

  7. Thanks for bringing out the Canadian viewpoint...and I agree with what Sandra said above, the names that conservatives tend to use are very misleading, much like their lies. I don't like the tone of their writing, without any respect for anyone anymore. I don't like the preferred sense that women have no voice, in many areas. Yes indeed, this force against freedom, against independent decision making, against even voters' majority winning elections...it's no fun to think about...but we must.

  9. I have been reading similar articles. It appears to be happening all over the US of A. If those who oppose birth control spent one iota of the time they use to oppose in supporting young, unmarried or desperately poor mothers, there might be fewer women needing to abort. But nowhere do these smug thugs mention what happens to the fetus after it is born.
I support abortion. Personally, I am appalled at the thought of abortion as birth control. But it is a woman's right to own her body. And one of the few wonderful medical advances in our time is the "morning after pill". Which the thugs are also defining as an abortifacient, even though it is not. Did you see the argument that as soon as the sperm hits the egg, the result is a human with all the rights included?
You hit my "on" button with this one. Sorry for the verbiage.

  10. Going backwards is never the way to go

  11. I am sick about all of this. We are indeed going backward to what conservatives consider the "good old days." For straight white men anyway.

  12. For me it's simple. To get out of this mess, vote blue, up and down.

  13. Don't get me going on what political parties do or don't do.

  14. It is shameful what is being done in the US. People don't understand that there is a difference between healthcare and religion. Some think they've the right to mix the two.

  15. US politics has been a shit-show since Obama left office. I worry about those Canadians who know more about US policy via Fox News aka propaganda. US politicians are far too intertwined with lobbyist religious groups. It's exhaustingly stupid, but I feel we have to pay attention because it creeps in here too. I live in Alberta and our Premier met publicly with Tucker Carlson...what an absolute embarrassment.

  16. Yes. Your last line says it all.

Our conservatives almost always have a religious bent to it all. It is a way to attempt to force women to behave in a 'god approved way'. It's always targetting women. I don't hear one conservative suggesting that viagra be removed from the 'covered' drugs list.

Plus, ours seem to be batshit crazy. Trump is saying that Biden is trying to kill him, and Margery Taylor Greene is saying that the FBI is trying to assassinate him. And...there is a cult willing to believe this. It's insanity, really it is.
