This poster offers a certain point of view. Whatever has been my reality, my life has not been made harder by the colour of my skin. So, I can accept the term when viewed this way.
I can live with the term, but wading very gently into this most delicate topic, I want to say that I don't care for it. I don't think it is the best way to characterize the issue of racial inequality.
To me the issue is not that whites get treated well but that minorities of colour get treated badly. Minorities are discriminated against when we all should be treated the same way — which is with common decency and equal opportunity.
What we don't need to do, in my opinion, is to eliminate what we are referring to as privilege.
What we do need need to do, in my opinion, is to raise everyone up to the same level so that no one group is especially privileged compared to other groups.
But the term is what it is and is the prevailing term of the times, so I can live with it. I just think it is not the most accurate or best way to frame the issue, but maybe this ↓ is.
I hear what you are saying, but I think the term "white privilege" mean the privilege to not be treated badly because of the color of our skin. Some people are and that certainly has to stop. We need to change hearts as well as minds to make that happen, and we need to speak up when we see something happening which is wrong. We cannot look the other way anymore. I think you do not.
ReplyDeleteAnd I forgot to say that I really like your "Love your neighbor" poster. It's great.
ReplyDeleteYes, indeed. There've been an outpouring of stories from people of color who were treated with suspicion (or worse) for no other reaason than skin color. It's heartbreaking.
ReplyDeleteI love that second poster. It's so true that we humans need to come together and love one another. Sending you and the rest of your family much love and appreciation. :-)
ReplyDeleteI shared that posted on FB, with the comment that loving all (the last line) is surely the hardest, because it does include the racist, the bigots, the KKK-ers, the violent, the narrow-minded, those I disagree with because they are disagreeable.
ReplyDeleteI finally understand the concept of white privilege as it is used today. Whatever we use to describe racism, it has to change.
ReplyDeleteWell, I am not white, I am Korean, which means I am in the minority in the USA. Yet, I have never been discriminated against. I have traveled extensively and, nope, have never been turned away from housing, restaurants, transportation, etc. As for work, I take the test, pass the interview, and get the job. No problem.
ReplyDeleteBlack people in the USA have the stigma of slavery, and that is the problem. The blacks have to be extra talented, extra intelligent, extra well dressed to be equal with other people.
I love the poster, and understand your thoughts about privilege. It's a tough concept for those of us who are white and who have never noticed our own advantages due to our skin color. I admit that I have been one of them.

ReplyDeleteI too struggle with the term in just the way you stated and have been thinking about it a lot too. Thank you so much for your post. I do also think, like you stated, that perhaps another term would be more effective. I think that unless a lot of people see and understand the definition you posted.... there will be miscommunication and a lot of folks who are Caucasian will regrettably “tune out” the very significant and real message that it is wrong and abhorrent that a person’s life is made harder by the color of their skin. A different, less provocative term, IMO, would better communicate the idea to the people who need to hear it and realize it.
Again, thank you for posting these thoughts. They were very much a mirror of my own.

We do have to wake up. Listen. Read. have some humanity.
ReplyDeletewell , love your neighbor is an ideal and we'll never make it. Racism is much more complicated than we think.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely. Lovely post! :)
ReplyDeleteThis is really thought-provoking. I'm very glad to read your thoughts on this and get your POV about this topic. I am a 73 yr. old black woman, grew up in Jasper, Texas, and my input and POV is toooo long to post here. Maybe I will blog about it…one day…maybe.
ReplyDeleteI pray that God has a good ending in store for America! Thanks for sharing this insightful post. Wishing you all the best!
Yes. Second poster is a classic.
ReplyDeleteDiscrimination has not always been against people of different colors or races, but also nationalities and religious beliefs as well. It’s way past time for all forms to end.
