I had never heard of this, but there is a case to be made that Jesus died on Thursday, not Friday. I came across this while reading a blog post by Biblical scholar, James Tabor: Jesus Died on a Thursday not a Friday.
One must assume two things:
- The biblical account is accurate.
- The year of crucifixion was 30CE.
In 30CE, the Passover meal would have occurred on the Thursday after sundown. In that case, both Friday and Saturday could be considered Sabbath days, so that would fit with the biblical account of Jesus being buried before the Sabbath. It's just that it would have been the Passover Sabbath (Friday) and not the weekly, Saturday Sabbath.
This would also explain how Jesus could have spent three nights in the tomb, which we can't square with the usual Good Friday account. He would have spent only two nights in the tomb in that case.
Tabor writes a lot more in his blog post, and if you also want to do a quick search, you can find other articles on the subject.
I don't want to do that kind of research but thought that it is a novel piece of information for me that I would also pass it on to you. Whether the day be Thursday or Friday, I don't think it changes any of the core elements of the narrative or jeopardizes anyone's basic beliefs. It's just something of interest to me and perhaps to you..
========================
What a day it was yesterday. We had wind, freezing rain, and even thunder and lightning — in April! in Canada! Trees were down all over. School was cancelled, and our garbage collection was suspended until today. It then remained outside, frozen in place overnight. Danica went to work for less than an hour at 4pm, before the store closed before 5. There were power failures in town, but we were spared this time.
A certainly wasn't roaming the streets for pictures, and I don't think may were, but, of course, some appeared on soc media. The second photo is by the same property where Sue and I take our sign photos.
We saw that Ottawa & Montreal got beat up in yesterday's storm. Oh those poor trees. Thankfully you & family are all safe. Here in the south (of Ontario) we had the thunder, lightening & rain all day. I give thanks no freezing rain for us.
ReplyDeleteAs to your research to Good Friday vs Good Thursday ... very interesting & thanks for the link.
You certainly had some dramatic weather, and I'm thankful you're all safe.
ReplyDeleteInteresting studies about the day of Jesus' death. Since we're uncertain anyway about calendars and changes in them, it's all a bit unclear, but, for believers, doesn't change the basic beliefs.
We have plenty of rain in our Thursday forecast, but hopefully not such awful wind as you had!
ReplyDeleteWow, such wind, so sad for trees, and those who lost power. We had wind yesterday (not as heavy as earlier) that came in little spurts. As I drove on the highway into Asheville cars and trucks would look like they were drunk, swerving just from the sudden gusts.
ReplyDeleteWe had snow last night but missed the storm force for a change.
ReplyDeleteWow. I'm glad that you are safe. We had a lot of lightning for the day. One of the converter boxes on one of our tvs conked out but that was all the damage we had.
ReplyDeletewe had the rain but none froze. bombed on wordle today.
ReplyDelete@Marcia. I struggled to another 6. That's two days in a row.
ReplyDeleteIt hit hard here, but we didn't lose power.
ReplyDeleteMajor damage there . I'm glad that your place and family are safe.
ReplyDeleteThat's some truly scary weather. Glad you were spared from a power failure!
ReplyDeleteThat's a crazy weather day for sure! Hopefully things will calm down as we get more into "spring." If Jesus was actually born in the spring, do scholars believe that he was crucified now too?
ReplyDeleteWow. I have a basement full of water from the storm but nothing like your wind and damage. Mine's not a lake anymore but definitely still puddles. And stinky, of course. Fans and humidifier are running. So, glad you didn't get that.
ReplyDeleteI never take anything in the Bible literally. Too many years passing before things were written and a lot of it is like the telephone game where the story starts with the kid with pigtails in the front right of the class and has changed tremendously by the time the freckle faced boy at the other end gets it. So, I'd buy that premise. It certainly makes sense timing wise. I'm always interested in that stuff -- but nope. Don't want to do the research!
The storm damage looks horrible. Quite a documentary style photographs for record keeping.
ReplyDeleteWe're still in a fine mess here. Lots of trees down, but none in my yard thank goodness. They keep pushing our ETR back. We saw hydro crews on the highway not far from here where a big pine took down lines so we have our fingers crossed. We even lost phone and internet until a short while ago.Yes, we have a generator.
ReplyDeleteI'm half heartedly working on a history degree. My thesis, if it ever gets finished (not likely) is proving Bible stories with historical/archealogical and natural proof.
Sorry about your ice storm!
ReplyDeleteWe had a major wind event last week. Trees down. Strange weather.
ReplyDeleteOh wow. I do hate ice storms, they are so dangerous and damaging. I am glad your place came through all right. We had a very bad one in 2003 that left this place looking like a war zone, like it had been bombed. So horrible.
ReplyDeleteIt is/was such a mess. We're going to pay a ton in clean up costs. I am so sad to see the bare trees, though.
ReplyDeleteWe got power back late on Saturday, but still have a lot of pine pieces to clear off the lanes around the house. I don't even want to think about what our bush trails are like. Luckily we have an active neighbour with chainsaws. What a mess!
