Saucy Me


When we 4 went out for breakfast, the other 3 people all felt compelled to speak of their disdain for saucy things like the dish I ordered. I like saucy food. Watch me pour gravy on my roast or turkey, for example.

This dish consisted of eggs benedict with bacon and feta cheese. It was delicious when we were last there, in mid-December. It was absolutely the best then.

Not so this time. Part of the fault was mine. The eggs were too runny; I just ordered wrongly. I don't like eggs hard, but I don't want them extremely runny either. I should have specified medium.

The worst part was that they were not hot but just a bit warm. The potatoes were piping hot, but not the eggs.

It wasn't the time to complain. Restaurants were just re-opening after a 6 week shut down, and I am sure everybody was feeling their way back into the routine. You have to give people a break sometimes. It was good enough on that day to get out and socialize.

I like your perspective: There does not need to be an outraged response every time that something is not quite up to snuff.

I once stopped at a fast food restaurant and watched someone throw a fit because her chicken sandwich came with chopped lettuce instead of a lettuce leaf as requested. I thought it was the strangest display I'd ever witnessed.

Making allowances is good. It's too easy to fall into outrage, in fact I think we live in the age of outrage!

You were/are a waitress's dream customer. Those potatoes do look quite crunchie & yummy. Eggs are a hard one, especially in poaching, to get just right, IMO. I think all the restaurant staff are feeling a little gun shy about this re-opening ... Let's lift our forks in common salute to those making & serving our breakfast, lunch or dinner.

We’re headed out for lunch today, against my better judgement. However, desperation compels me. I hope 8 days post booster is sufficient. That sounds like an interesting take on Eggs Benny.

I feel reluctant to complain about food problems too. Long eons ago I worked in a kitchen for a summer, and I know just how hard it is to get everything perfect.
Ah, the joys of going out for food! next week for me.

My dinner order last night had a bloop in it...instead of getting 2 tacos in my meal, I got 2 meals. Well, that wasn't doable...so the waitress took out one, and handed me the bag. I handed her the money and said, take $1 for a tip please...and then she went through her stash (I wonder what she calls that wad in her apron pocket anyway) and gave me my change. She never apologized...and neither did I. But we each thanked each other. The meal was prepared very well, compared to my last time when one of the essential ingredients had been left out. I hadn't made any comment. It was in this time and I really enjoyed that it was a hot meal when I got home. Oh and the staff were all masked, but none of the other patrons going in and out through the foyer where I had to stand for my process. It was before 5 pm, I usually avoid more people by being early, but not this time. Sorry your eggs weren't hot! I wasn't sure my dinner would be by the time I'd carried it to and from car in the freezing weather. Yes, pandemic exchanges do mean being extra cautious in manners as well as sharing breath.

I haven't been to a restaurant in what seems like forever. But it IS disappointing to get warm food. You're right-- your own error you can own, but warm food -- nope. I'm sorry about that. It looked like a breakfast with wonderful and delicious potential!

We cannot risk restaurants these days. Another cancer treatment looms.
Good for you for understanding the situation. I really enjoy eggs benny! I'm not particular about the yolk, but it should be hot and a bit runny.
Hubby went out and got me a BLT on Sunday. We try to help the restaurants as much as we can.

You are brave. I haven't eaten inside a restaurant for 2 years! Your breakfast looks very good but I know watt you mean about eggs being too runny, and not hot enough.

Although I have asked for missing items before, I have never once in my life complained about the quality of food in a restaurant setting. I just don't go back or if I do, don't order the same thing. For me, it is the same when I go to someone else's home for a meal. Everything is absolutely tasty... even if I have to choke it down.

I agree with your attitude 100%. Restaurants are having a tough time and it's great to get out at all, although I haven't done so for quite a while. Now that my mom has had her surgery, perhaps I'll live a little larger. :)

I totally agree that we can all give restaurant workers a little (or a LOT) of grace these days. And those potatoes look delicious.

It's all about the timing with eggs staying warm. My husband hates cold eggs. Last BnB we stayed at in Sept in Maine served cold eggs - well, breakfast was all around bad. Didn't complain to servers but did complain when we checked out.
In Buffalo now helping with grandchild care as we wait on new baby's arrival any day.

I miss having breakfast out. I'm still too chicken to try inside. I Love your courtesy with the wait staff, it's a tough job. We do have some really good "get it through the window" places; wonderful sandwiches and soups, and a marvelous authentic Mexican restaurant is my favorite thru-the-window food.
