Flawed Humans

If I may delve a little further into my lack of expertise at sudoku, permit me to share something about my comparative results.

When I finish a game, it will say something about it. It might tell me that my score was better than usual, or perhaps that I completed it in more or less time than my average. Another variant is that I have completed x number of games in a row.

That is all fine and dandy, but sometimes, it tells me how my time compares to the average player. The comparison is never flattering, for I am typically in the 30-40% range. Very seldom am I faster than more that 50% of the players.

This doesn't surprise me.

For about 10 years, I hosted the high school chess club in my room at noon. I sometimes played against the kids. I won most of the time against most of the kids. When they wanted revenge, they would challenge me to a game of speed chess. If I ever won any of those speed matches, it sure wasn't many.

This affects me in daily life too. My brain (I typed brian again) must work like a cow's digestive system. It just takes the information awhile to get all of the way in there. Sometimes, I will get back to Sue hours later or even longer with something that came up in conversation earlier. I may continue as though we had just been discussing it, but by then she has lost the thread and stares at me blankly

This proclivity has been unfortunate at times. There are times when I really should have said some Father Know Best type of thing, but I missed the opportunity with my slow processing.

But that is better than the converse, for sometimes when I have have said or done something impulsively, it has been the wrong thing to say or do. I guess I do need time to digest effectively.

I am a very flawed human being. I guess most of us are in our own ways.

  1. Yes. We are all flawed. It is nice when two flawed people find their flaws to be compatible. I am the word brain in our family. Tim is the practical genius. Between the two of us, we can pretty much sort out anything that comes up.

  2. More of the humans in this world should have your flaw ... you are living the embodiment of the phrase "think before you act". Of all the flaws we could possibly have, yours certainly is the better kind, IMO. I play Myjongg for one & it keeps track of my time; best today, best for the month, best ever.

  3. Flawed is a great adjective for life in general. We are all works in progress, AC. Regarding your late responses to things, the question, “How soon do you want to know?” comes to mind. It’s what we say around here anyway.

  4. Ah, and the tortoise does win against the hare...which probably meant a lot of lost bets if there had been any at the time of the original race. I don't know where I fall on that spectrum...but I'm glad to know that you know your skills! I'll have to start watching my own reaction times.

  5. Thoughtful and thorough process is not flawed. I suspect that all of us, at one time, have come up with the perfect response at 3:OO AM.
I am fast and sloppy, myself. And it is not something of which I can be proud.
Chess? If there is a clear path or a convention, I am on it. Pair me with a slow and methodical opponent and the result is not pretty.

  6. Most of the time my best responses are ones that come to mind hours after I needed to come up with them.

  7. My needlework design high school teacher said at the outset: I will accept fast, good stitching or slow good stitching. I won't tolerate fast or slow sloppy stitching! Stayed with me all these decades.
We're all flawed. It's about recognition and management.

  9. My impulsive efforts have not been wise. We all are works in progress.

  10. If I'm angry it's best not to think too fast because I can make some cutting remarks. Deserved or not, I can't ever take them back. Wordle is nice because it's not timed. I get a grade for Wordi(a similar game) and it's on speed. It makes me nervous sometimes.

  11. I don't think there is any such being as a perfect human being. Just being human makes us a bit flawed, it seems to me. :-)

  12. I am definitely flawed.

  13. You sound like a wonderful human who's not flawed, but prefers slow mode. I can think of a solution more easily by stepping away and thinking off and on about it. This is why you nor I are Emergency Room nurses! Linda in Kansas

  14. I have never done well with timed tests or games. Even if I manage to finish them it is so stressful. Awk! Some of us need time to ponder. ;)

  15. I dare you to find me a human who is not flawed. I suspect I won't like them very much! I like that you return to something later -- it's good to know it's not forgotten. I have a couple of games I always time myself on. Otherwise, I'd feel I was wasting the time! Is it the Amish who always put a flaw in their quilts to remind that no one is perfect?

  16. You are funny!
    Hooray for games.
