A Logical Fallacy Maybe

I have recently written that I sometimes want to post a rebuke on social media, and I do, except that I usually delete it before posting. That way, I get it off my chest, but I am not upsetting the space-time continuum around me.

When FB friend posted a link, the one over there, →
I was tempted to respond. I didn't though. Except in my head.

In my head, I said to her: "Rex is a right-wing, hard-assed conservative in a perpetual state of rage."

I am trying to figure in my head whether that would constitute me committing an ad hominem logical fallacy.

It would be true that I would be saying something about the author rather than what he said in the article. On the other hand, I have read enough of the man to have formed what I think is a very valid opinion.

I will leave it up to you to judge, but I am not going to bother reading the article. I am content enough just to get it off my chest, here in my own space that will not likely cause controversy and argument.

Friend and I were once in the same Bible Study group. We were both evangelicals. She remains one, and, from what I can tell, also a fundamentalist. Although many don't realize it, you can be evangelical without being a fundamentalist who believes, among other things, in a 6-day creation 6000 years ago. I was never that, but I was a very committed evangelical just the same.

Friend went west — literally — to Alberta, the right wing, Bible Belt of Canada. I went the other way, both literally and  and philosophically. Sue and I moved east from the city where friend and I both once lived. I also moved radically in my beliefs, for I am now anything but an evangelical.

In my mind, there would have been a certain repartee between fiend and I after I wrote, "Rex is a right-wind, hard-assed conservative in a perpetual rage." I would have shown how clever I can be. But our back-and-forth would have been full of sound and fury signifying nothing although, on my side of the exchange, I would like to think that it would not have constituted a tale told by and idiot. (With thanks to The Bard as spoken by Lady Macbeth)

Happily, her link has kept the writing juices flowing for another day when it is cold enough to freeze the brain. So thanks be to Rex and friend.

Rex is a fellow Newfoundlander I can’t listen to or read any more.

Yeah, but he is, very occasionally, funny. I think that ad hominem would occur if you whacked the fiend for reading him. Hmm. I will think about this, if my brain ever thaws.

It is hard to hold back. Everybody is a true believer. You believe your stuff, and she believes her stuff.

His words define who he is: a self righteous blowhard and jackass advancing into a rage filled senility.

This is interesting. If I knew who the subject is. I'm guessing a political figure. Fun anyway.

I've never heard of Rex but when I hear someone spout things that I am fundamentally against, I tend to ponder what happened in their life to cause them to believe such things rather than focus on them saying those things at this moment.

Not knowing who Rex is you lost me on this one.

You are the second blogger to refer to Rex this week. I know who he is, familiar with a few of his editorials, both spoken & written. Now I am curious about his being descripted as a right wing hard assed conservative in a perpetual state of rage ... but maybe this description is for most of us living in a perpetual state of lockdown captivity.

Don't know Rex but I certainly understand the temptation to post a scathing comment to idiocies on FB or other social media. It does indeed signify nothing as far as how much impact it has on the other person. Unfortunately.

It's impossible to have a discussion with these people as they are always right. I was also brought up evangelical and it took me years to get my head straightened out.

Strange I never thought of Canada having a bible belt.

I did not know the fellow, so I looked him up. He sounds like he is a Canadian version (meaning Rex is a bit more gentle and refined) of the US fellow who died about a year ago named Rush Limbaugh.

I can understand your frustration.

I didn't know who Rex was either so had to look him up. Sounds like a right wing, radical commentator. I would have to just walk away.
