Typically, birthdays and some other occasions start with breakfast out somewhere. It often occurs before the actual event, particularly in the case of Mothers and Fathers Day when places may become more than a little crowded on the actual day. A very long time ago, we went out for a Mothers Day breakfast and vowed to never do it again. Since this birthday was to culminate in a Chinese take-away for dinner, I thought that it wouldn't be best to have two big meals on the same day. So, with my birthday on Friday, we had our breakfast out on Thursday.
A friendly lady from the neighbouring table offered to take a picture of the two of us.
On Friday, the actual birthday, we were off on our bikes by 9:30. Once I was saddled, riding and feeling pretty good, I decided to try to break the 10k barrier. The birthday seemed like an appropriate time to make the extra effort.
Ride #18
Sue had made the take-away order on Thursday for Shauna to pick up at 5 on Friday. It was plentiful and enough for all of us to enjoy leftovers the next day.
Shauna brought wine, and JJ topped me up before bringing in the cake, which was actually a pie. I did request apple pie in lieu of a cake. Ever since COVID, we just put a candle on a single piece. I had often thought of the ceremonial blowing of germs before COVID but hadn't wanted to be the one to pull the plug on the tradition.
The procession goes like ↓ this. Sue lights the candle. JJ carries the cake, and Sue follows with the camera while people sing the song.
Of course, we always try to get a picture of the ceremonial blowing.
In case you are wondering where Danica was in all of this foofaraw, she was taking these pictures with my camera.
Nice celebration. JJ has put some inches on his height! I didn't recognize him at first.
ReplyDeleteI'm much the same way. We often celebrate ahead of the actual days, especially if it involves going out to restaurants to avoid soul crushing days like mother's day.
ReplyDeleteHappy belated birthday!
Such great pictures! It looks like it was a most successful birthday!!
ReplyDeleteVery neat celebration a la pie...what flavor I wonder... JJ's shirt is really fab, my FL son loves shirts like that, and I have a few blouses in that genre'. How nice to have another family celebration!
ReplyDeleteSuch fun. Your family knows how to celebrate. Happy birthday again!
ReplyDeleteThat is fun.
ReplyDeleteNot celebrating on the actual holiday is the way to go. Crowds are not my thing, especially now. It looks perfect--from the breakfast to the pie. Many happy returns!
ReplyDeleteIt looks and sounds like a great birthday celebration! Have a wonderful year, AC.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a very happy and wonderful birthday celebration! Hau'oli la hanau, John!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great tradition: Pie and one candle. It looks like everyone else enjoyed it, too. Belated Happy Birthday.

ReplyDeleteWell done on the bike ride. And what a great birthday tradition!
ReplyDeleteThe next Birthday Celebration of us will be 23rd. Oldest son will be 34. Had to get out some scratch paper to figure out his age.
ReplyDeleteCoffee is on and stay safe
Congratulations on all counts. We aren't going to be eating in a restaurant anytime soon. You are brave!
ReplyDeleteWell, I'm really glad I went back to catch up on posts I've been missing during art camp so I can wish you happy birthday! It sounds like a fabulous day! And I hope it will be a wonderful new year! (We've given up on the candle blowing over the whole cake, too.... and I'm much happier for the new single candle tradition!
ReplyDeleteShe did a fine job. In fact, high skill level for all, even the candle blower. Fun!
