Voting Online

I just voted in our municipal election. Actual voting day is to be Monday 24th, but we’ll be away, so I voted via the internet.

What with personal ID questions, a captcha, and a unique and personal PIN that had been sent by mail and was then required to be entered online, I thought the process was extremely secure, and if possible even more secure than in-person voting. I also liked the fact that I was asked to verify my selections before they were counted.

Overall I was reassured and satisfied by the process.

  1. I really like that idea…. online voting. Unfortunately, I think with the extreme political wrangling in the US, it would never be allowed.

In my opinion, though, it would give one more option for folks so that we would get better turnout for voting.

I do not know if there is much of this in Canada or not, but here in the US, the most appalling aspect of our process occurs way ahead of the elections….. Gerrymandering! This has gone on in a very, very corrupt fashion since at least the mid 1980s so that crazy-looking (shape) districts abound…. mostly to benefit the Republican Party (even though occasional Democratic skewing has occurred as well). The net effect is to create skewed results that do not truly reflect a given populace.

  2. I wish the U.S. had online voting. I always find it so hypocritical that we file taxes online but it isn't safe enough to vote on it.

  3. We have mail-in voting here which I like a lot although I now use a drop box since the mails aren't as reliable as they used to be. On-line voting would be great!

  4. Gerrymandering first happened in 1812! And never went away.

We have universal vote by mail, which I've done for years. And now there are drop boxes all over. Also ballot tracking, so I know the vote I cast a couple of weeks ago for the November election has been received. I like all this because there's a literal paper trail, unlike electronic approaches.

    1. True….. but especially since the 1980s the level of such has gotten even more ludicrous and extreme. I have seen several “districts” that have thin, long feelers of land added into them so that it looks akin to a spider body to capture the “desired” voters to sway an election.

  5. I'll be at the polling station on Monday hoping the lineup moves quickly.

  6. Hawaii is all vote by mail though ... pretty much quite a few Republicans (even here-and there is that option) want to stand in line and vote in person.

  10. Sounds like a good idea. What changes would take place with the political pitches?

  11. We voted online for our trustee. (As I wrote our council was acclaimed.) It was seamless.

  12. Yes, we did too. Other than JG trying to look over my shoulder as I did it, all, went well.

  13. Replying to 'Red'. The major change here is that the political advertising comes out immediately and the candidates meetings are held before the voting opens, a week before the final day here.

  14. Normally I vote in advance, but this year will be doing it on election day.
