We recently went into an Unforgotten frenzy. By that I mean that we binge-watched three series of the British Mystery of that name.
We have watched the first three series before, but when I saw that series four was beginning to be shown on PBS, that was all of the nudge that we needed. We don't currently get PBS in this house, but I am fairly confident that the program will come to one of our two British streaming channels.
We subscribe to both Acorn and Britbox. I think we watched the first three series of Unforgotten on Britbox.
The main characters, the cops, are played by Nicola Walker (DCI Cassie Stuart) and Sanjeev Bhaskar (DI Sunny Khan), |
It is a cold case (historical crimes) show, each series or season comprising six episodes. Each of these series revolves around four characters who seem to have some connection, however tenuous, to the historical crime. At first, the viewer is hard pressed to ascertain how the four suspects are connected, but they always are in some way.
It is so well done that I sometimes feel as though I am watching actual people and not characters in a script. Not so long ago, I posted here of some of the typical plot contrivances that mystery series tend to resort to using. However, I can't say that Unforgotten employs any of these tired devices.
If you are the type who requires a lot of action, then this is probably not the show for you, but if you like understated and absorbing drama and mystery, then it is, most definitely, the show for you.
I enjoy those two actors. They do great work!
ReplyDeleteMy wife and I love this series. We also loved Nicola in Last Tango in Halifax. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely! Fortunately we can get season four on our PBS station, but have to wait each week for them to dole it out.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, if you have Btitbox, look for Line of Duty, another well done police mystery series.
My husband and I have been watching this series on PBS Masterpiece down here in the states. We watched last season as well. Excellent.
ReplyDeleteWhat fun...I'm binging on listening to and reading digital books by Kellerman. She's done a series and I have been sitting around for what feels like ages (being sick) and am almost through with I think 24 books. Maybe my computer can give better sound than the TV so I can enjoy these Brit mysteries. Thanks for the recommendation!
ReplyDeleteDavid likes to binge watch, too. He subscribes to Netflix, Prime, Peacock, and Apple TV. He just loves his TV.
ReplyDeleteAlways on the look out for good mystery shows. I'll have to see if we can find this on PBS to record on Tivo.
ReplyDeleteWe've just started watching Unforgotten also and really enjoying it. Another show that is sounding interesting is Professor T.
ReplyDeleteI've not heard of it but am familiar with Nicola
ReplyDeleteWe get both Acorn and Britbox so I think we'll look into that.
ReplyDeleteAnother series to find.
ReplyDeleteYes.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a show that I would love!
ReplyDeleteLOVE this show! :)
ReplyDeleteI remember that gentleman from a doctor show, the name just escapes me at the moment. He and his wife moved to a Welsh village where he practiced. It was a good program. He's a pretty good actor.
ReplyDeleteThanks, John, for the reminder about Unforgotten. We also have watched previous seasons and I saw this week that a new episode of the current season was being broadcast on the local PBS station, which we do receive without a sable subscription. We did not watch it having not seen the previous episode(s) and as you know the season is a continuous building on a case. Today, I will see if I can watch online. I agree it's a great series.
