Things That Keep Happening

We turned onto Bridge Street, which is our main street. The phone started ringing. We were only a minute from our destination, Freska for breakfast with Bob and Barb, so I ignored the phone, but we soon discovered it had been Bob calling.

As soon as we parked, Barb was banging on the window, telling us that the restaurant was closed. The last time this happened was on a Monday and that led to my post, Town Realities. In that piece I explained that this sort of thing could occur in towns — Monday closings, I mean.

Well it happened again but this time on a Friday. They were taking an extended seasonal holiday and would re-open tomorrow. We did find another restaurant: a different place than last time. That was the first thing that reoccurred.

After a nice long chat, we headed home and got our bearings for awhile before heading out for a walk on a sunny winter day. That led to a few forgettable photos that I will likely post tomorrow, but it also led to another ridiculous hat episode: Thing 2.

It was last February that I posted Fool of a Toque when my toque rode up in a nonsensical manner. It was so ridiculous that Sue took a picture on the way home. I haven't seen the toque since then. Thanks goodness.

It sort of happened again, this time with a cap, but it wasn't the hat's fault on this occasion.

I was wearing a coat that leaves a little gap at the neck. The day was cold enough that I thought to cover my neck, so I grabbed a cowl-like thing, pulled it over my head and down to cover my neck. The problem soon revealed itself. The cowl was too long and so it bunched up and basically knocked my hat askew, at least it did on a day when I needed to use the ear flaps.

Sue took these pics when we got back to the car after our walk. I swear I was not hamming it up for the camera. You can see how the neck-thing knocked my earflaps up which in turn knocked the peak down. I saw a lot of ground on that walk I tell you.

Needless to say, this neck thing is going to follow the toque thing to wherever these things go after fulfilling their purpose of making me look ridiculous. As if I require any assistance in that endeavour.

  1. May I suggest your write a Dr. Seuss-themed poem about these hat mishaps, er
    "mishats," lol.

  2. Maybe you need to call ahead? Unless these recurring themes amuse everyone, in which case, not!

    1. Wherever the toque went, it's not far enough. This hat is fine, but the cowl has to go.

  5. I guess you'll have to be careful about matching clothes.

  6. We are been struggling with closed restaurants lately too! Our favorite hangout lost its heat the day after Christmas so she has been closed. Was to open today, but then it snowed. Then we stopped for lunch at a new bakery today, and they were closed. So was the coffee shop.
    The hat thing though...that's hilarious!

    1. Chains are never closed, but the locally owned businesses can be tricky. I understand, but it can be frustrating.

  7. AC, there are these soft woolly things, a rectangle of knit yarn, called a 'scarf'. You wrap it around your neck under your coat and stay warm. Then you can rip that useless cup off the back of your neck.
Or, that is MY winter insulation, anyway,
I only have the vision problem when wearing a raincoat with hood or a bug shirt that flaps right in my face and I find a ball cap, firmly anchored, holds the hood up or pushes the mesh away.
Ah, the joys of dressing for the weather. And the black flies. I prefer the weather, frankly

    1. I dislike scarves, but Sue has retrieved one from wherever it was. I don't need one for the other coat as it zips right up.

  9. These are great photos! It's difficult to keep track of when places are open/closed because many of their websites aren't updated either.

    1. Often a google search will tell us, but I didn't think to look. I just presumed. It has never happened before, but suddenly it has happened twice.

    1. Wednesday seems like an odd choice, assuming there must be a choice.

  11. Many places around here close on Mondays. I never heard of Wednesday closures. I sort of like your toque adventures, AC.

  12. Mondays are when places are closed locally. However, your hat silliness is apprectiated. I love hats and never can have enough. I even made a silly wild colored hat and scarf to match.
I can rotate through my warm hats in the winter with glee.
A couple of local little restaurants in our area announce closings for a week during this time of year and then they pick a week during the fall too. This way, everyone gets time off at the same time.

  13. I swear my winter hats grow once I place them on my head...and slide down into my eyes within a few minuets so I end up pushing the whole thing up...and probably look like something big headed. Your hats do look adorable in their new angles...because after all Sue thought so! Restaurants! Oh geese, yes we want to go local, but there are now Mon. or Tues closings, and who keeps track? I'd die if I ran into a Wednesday closing, so do keep that quiet.

  19. The toque photo puts me in mind of an grumpy gnome. As far as the other hat...I think you could avoid all that by getting yourself a scarf to pull up around your ears. I'll bet the ever-talented-with-a-crochet-hook Sue could make one for you!
