Oh Good! I've Been Stupid Again

I have a very good recipe for cauliflower soup. Aside from 4 cups of cauliflower, it calls for 2 cups of leeks, 1 cup of sweet potato, as well as other add-ins. I brought home the ingredients from my earlier shopping this week.

After I bring the ingredients home, Sue usually puts them away. She'll wash the fruit and veggies and put things in containers. On this occasion, she went the extra mile by preparing both the cauliflower and the leeks. She told me that she had prepared the cauliflower florets, but when I started to gather the ingredients, I was pleasantly surprised to see that she had also sliced the leeks. That was almost the biggest part of the preparations.

I gathered the ingredients together, did the cooking, and used the blender to to puree slightly more than half of the ingredients into soup.

The result was quite tasty, even though I had substituted cheddar cheese for Swiss cheese.

Even though it was good, something seemed different.

As Sue was falling asleep that night, she came to the realization that she hadn't washed the cauliflower container.

No people! I had not forgotten to add cauliflower, but . . . I had used the wrong container. I used the container with leftover cauliflower after Sue had measured the 4 required cups in a different container.  The container thatI used probably had only half or even less of the required amount of florets.

And that was what was wrong — the soup was not as thick as it usually is. It was still tasty, but it wasn't the same. It had been awhile since I last made it, so I just put it down to faulty memory.

Sue said that she would cook some of the rest of the cauliflower and integrate it with the remainder of the soup. She did that little thing, and, so, we had a heartier bowl last night.

Although I made one of my usual faux pas, it was a good thing in a way because it gave me a fresh blog topic. I should make a collection of these types of posts: The Pratfalls of AC

  1. That recipe sounds interesting, especially with the addition of the sweet spuds. Any chance of sharing...the recipe?

    2. I was going to ask for this also, thank you! I'm not a fan of sweet potatoes, but my family love them and I suspect that not much of that flavor comes through.

  2. No need to share the recipe with me, not a huge cauliflower fan. I do like it raw however!

  6. My hubby likes potato soup and really dislikes cauliflower -- I love it -- but this recipe could go for lots of great veggies.
LOL on forgetting. I've done things like that. Just chalk it up to being distracted??? :)

  7. I love a good cauliflower soup with leeks and potatoes. I guess I should say loved. Since I turned lactose intolerant, it is not something I can have anymore without medical supplements and even they are not entirely foolproof on preventing side effects.

  8. What a good division of labor. Sorry that the wrong cauliflower got used, a simple mistake it seems.

  9. Yes, please share that recipe! It sounds amazing. And I could substitute butternut for sweet potato, thus using some of this plethora of squashes!

  10. At least it was a minor error easily fixed. Yes, it does sound good.

  11. It was a fixable error. Mine often are not. If I ever write a book on the topic, I'd have to title it 'Shining My Light Dimly'.

  13. AC I wish I had a dollar for every time I've managed to mess up a recipe! I could retire to the Turks and Caicos and loll about on the beach forever, hahaha! But your mistake was oh-so-minor and I'm sure it was delicious. I'm fortunate in that my TG almost never takes issue with anything I cook, no matter how far afield of the intended outcome I have ended up, always pronouncing the result tasty and satisfying, hahaha! xoxo

  14. We all forget things everyday. Of course we are not as honest as you are to publish them! I hope you both have a wonderful week friend. Aloha

  16. Sweet potato is great in soups. My secret soup ingredient is usually ginger or some pickle juice. My friend Chris has another secret ingredient: butter. Yum.

  17. I would have made exactly the same mistake, given the state of our fridge.

  21. Smart move on integrating the cauliflower. But I can see how that would happen. Similar has happened to me!

  23. That does sound good.
I'm not well at the mo, and have been having soups for lunch and dinner.
Tomato, cream of chicken and pea and ham.
My partner makes all kinds of soups though. I buy them from the store !

  24. Sounds yummy and also like something I would do. My husband loves to cook now that he is retired. He comes up with some fantastic keepers.

  25. I love cauliflower in any way, shape or form…. and could easily eat an entire head in one sitting if I allowed myself to do so. Having sweet potatoe in your recipe is intriguing me, and I look forward to seeing the recipe if you post it.

  29. We had steel cut oats instead of rolled oats in JG's fav cookie recipe. Try getting that out of the crack in your molar. Sigh. Memory lane not available for travel.

  30. That soup sounds excellent! I love cauliflower and cheese--the more the better. However, anything in the cabbage family isn't always my friend. :(
