Jonathan's Remembrance Day Reading

It was a workday, and, so, very few parents were able to attend the Remembrance Day, uh remembrance, at Jonathan's school. However, Sue and I showed up to support JJ, who was to do one of the readings.

JJ, as a presenter, made his appearance to the gym before the rest of the school, but he had great trouble affixing his poppy.

I was too distracted, just snapping pictures through my telephoto, to notice his predicament, but Sue called him over and sorted out his problem.

Once Jonathan's predicament was remedied, the rest of the school came trooping in class by class. Among them was JJ's step sister. She wasn't seated far from us, so Sue had her turn about for pictures. For the second snap, she put her cadet hat on.

When all were seated, each class affixed a poppy to the cross.

Soon Jonathan was doing his little part, and he did it very well.

I converted one to mono.

After the service, Jonathan came to sit with us, or at least with grandma. You might correctly guess from the tissue that Sue had found the ceremony moving. In part, of course, she was remembering her father. But just before the service, a teacher of Sue's acquaintance had informed us that her mother was dying, her mother being an old friend who had since moved far away. She had been one of our first friends when we moved to this town.

Then, JJ wheedled to get us to agree to take him out of school for the day. So what could we do? He never really did any schooling at all since the ceremony was held first thing. Oh well.

From there, he managed to get a trip to McD's plus (plus, I say) a somewhat pricey card for online gaming time. What's a grandparent to do, eh?

Perhaps he will be able to put the card to use today since the weather is bad enough to keep the  the school buses in their sheds. And so, winter is definitely here, and this the the kids' first snow day.

I always enjoyed the school Remembrance Day ceremonies.

A day with your grandson is special indeed.

It was Veteran's Day here and we drove to Northern VA to attend a program at mother in law's retirement community. She's in the chorus and they sang some to contribute to program. It was quite moving too. And the ushers did pass out red poppies!

A day he will remember, I bet.
Note that the Legion is now also supplying a black centre pin with a clasp to hold the poppy in place. You can only get them at the Legion, not from the trays.
I had a daughter for whom the Cadet program was a wonderful learning experience.

A lot of schools were closed yesterday for the holiday, and again today for the icy roads (no snow yet here at 2400 feet...but our rain may be freezing right now and all day tomorrow as well.

...and what else are grandparents to do?

Very nice! I unfortunately believe US schools no longer recognize Remembrance Day with actual assemblies any longer. To me, that is very sad.

How delightful to be there for him and break him free!

Good shots!

I attended the national service, and the snow started while I was in the War Museum.

Portions of the Canal are frozen over in the city, which I've never seen this early.
