Elbows Up

Elbows Up has quickly become a simultaneously humourous yet serious Canadian meme in these troubled times.

It's a hockey term. When players go into the corner to fight over a loose puck,  they will jostle for all that they are worth. The elbows may come up aggressively in such scrums and can cause damage to tender jaws.

Hockey is a tough sport, and Canadians can be a tough lot. Expect us to keep our metaphorical elbows up in the coming days.

Just as hockey players are willing to take a beating to gain possession of the puck, so are Canadians prepared to take a beating to stand our ground in the face of unwarranted aggression, for stand our ground we will.

I hope you didn't miss Prime Minister Trudeau's speech yesterday. He demonstrated intelligence and steadfast commitment and determination. It's not anything like the rambling and ranting we are accustomed to from the senile 47.

It is below and only 13 minutes.

    We love you!

  3. Just saw the same thing on Debra's blog. A new expression to me but, "Elbows up!" to all of us against the Felon.

  4. I heard parts of this, but not all of it. Thank you for posting it. I think his words to his people were good ones, and words that we can use too. We will get through this, together. Tim has had his fill of the news. He got up, switched on the news as usual, and then switched it off in anger.

The message from my own 'leader' is clear. When the powerful make a decision, it will be abided by. Russia wants Ukraine? It gets it. America wants Canada? It gets it. Elon Musk wants to strip away all protections for the most vulnerable 'parasites' (and yes, he called us that), he gets to do it. Any defensive action becomes, in his mind, an act of aggression. That is how he is portraying Canada's actions this morning. You have chosen to resist...you have become the aggressor.

The thing to keep in mind is that these tariffs are unsustainable. They cannot last without crippling America. So much for 'making America great again'.

  6. A great speech. Wish we had that caliber of a leader here. Thanks for sharing his speech.

    1. No, you don't want him, in reality. It was a great speech. He speaks well. That is how he managed to get elected, and his tenure has been unfortunate because he isn't really too intelligent. But he did well on this.

    2. Sorry, Mary, he isn't intelligent?
He got us through COVID, and Trump 1.0. I really don't understand how you can say that.
His time has come, but really.

    3. The thing is, Mary, and I think you'll agree, is that he has run intellectual circles around anyone who has opposed him. The Con candidates has been severely lacking.

  7. Best thing I have even seen from Trudeau. And I am about to put the flag up everywhere I can. Love the Elbow image. I am imagining it hitting the wobbly jaw of Mr Trumpet. Thump. Yea. Never thought I would approve of hockey fights, but, hey ...Canadian, eh?

  8. An excellent, intelligent and patriotic speech! Since the U.S.A. tariffs and threats to our sovereignity, I've been boycotting as much U.S.A. products as possible. Also, since they stopped supporting Ukraine, I definitely won't support them. Elbows Up!!!

  11. I applaud your stance. I would do the same. I think in large part, tariffs are always made extremely simple by the side you stand with when in fact, they are quite complex as to how or if a particular side will benefit. Saying that, I'm not sure how you Canadians have provoked Trump. I don't see our northern border as a problem in the slightest and thus see no reason for the tariffs. With other places, I think a case could be made.

    1. It's simple. He wants to destabilize us, so he can annex us and get all of our mineral wealth on the cheap.

  12. It really is discouraging.
I think we are in for a rough ride.

  13. I listened to your PM's speech yesterday and thought it was terrific. I hate the stupid tariffs.

  14. Thanks for the explanation. I thought "elbows up" meant to get to work fighting the tariffs by any means. I am hating this admin with every fiber (fibre) of my being. It's frightening and discouraging that so many believe the merde that he's peddling. Trump not Trudeau.

  16. What a speaker. What a leader. Thank you for sharing the clip. Wishing the best for all of you. And offering my apologies for the ridiculous person who has caused such havoc.
