I looked out my den window yesterday morning and decided it take this shot through the screen.
A reader might wonder why I would take a banal picture of kids waiting for the school bus.
I took it because it stirred a memory of me standing there with Dani and JJ over the course of about half-a-dozen years. The kids were young, and we spent a lot of time with them. They are good times to look back on, and the scene was especially poignant yesterday.
Why yesterday?
Because it was the day of Dani's senior prom. It was an ending and, of course, a beginning.
It was a big day for her, getting her hair done, getting all made up, and getting into that very special dress before heading of to dinner and dance and a party.
Unfortunately, it was a bleak and rainy day, so the few minutes that we had for photos were quite restricted. She posed on the rather unflattering porch, and we pointed our cameras upward, and took the best shots that we could for a few minutes.
Shooting upwards, especially in a hurry, is not best portrait practice, but needs must. What I did in post for that ↑ photo and the following two closer photos was to tilt them a bit vertically. I think it helped a bit.
After a few photos like the one above, her mother thought to have her wear her wristlet (wrist corsage) .
The next and final photo, for now, was opportunistic. We seemed to be done with the photoshoot. While waiting to get into the car, Dani's beau was holding the umbrella as they faced each other. The moment and background looked good to me. I clicked and like the result very much.
Then, they were off. I think first for formal photos in Ottawa and then dinner followed by dance and then a party of some sort. I know some of it took place in Gatineau (cross the river in Quebec), so there was a fair bit of travelling that day. Her dad drove her into Ottawa and then picked her up from wherever in the wee hours.
Sue was taking photos too, clicking even more than I was, and I will post her photos in the fullness of time, probably tomorrow. I may have a few more too. We shall see.
Just beautiful! Making good memories.

ReplyDeleteA big occasion for the whole family. She looks beautiful.
ReplyDeleteDani looks beautiful.
ReplyDeleteOh, she's beautiful. I like your impromptu umbrella picture, they look so sweet!
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely young woman, and a fabulous dress! That last one gives the impression that he's holding the umbrella right next to her bosom...a word which has been out of use since I was young! But you get the picture!
ReplyDeleteThat's a gorgeous dress and she looks very happy! The years pass quickly, don't they? I'm noticing that too.
ReplyDeleteSo quickly.
DeleteThat last photo is great! We;; done. Good looking young lady in a beautiful dress!
ReplyDeleteThanks. It was an impromptu candid, which is sometimes the best.
DeleteGreat pictures. She looks really happy and I love her dress.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely beautiful! Looks like a Southern Belle. The gentleman holding the umbrella is cute: as if no rain will damage the day! Linda in Kansas
ReplyDeleteYes, I think she does, and he was very considerate and patient.
DeleteI do like the beauty, her beau, and the bumbershoot. Nice capture.

ReplyDeleteSuch a milestone. And so beautiful!
ReplyDeleteWhat a touching blend of nostalgia and new beginnings—capturing both the quiet echoes of childhood and the graceful step into adulthood, rain and all.
ReplyDeleteIt made me smile, as I read this. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteThat's a big day for the whole family. It is what it is when it comes to weather and rain.

DeleteThose of us sho have been reading your blog these past many years well remember the days of waiting for waiting for the school bus with your two grands, those years have gone quickly😉. Dani looks lovely and happy on her special night.
ReplyDeleteYou've been here for a long time.
DeleteHow wonderful! I never went to Prom. My boyfriend asked me and I asked him if we could go riding at a stables instead. That turned out to be quite the fun trip for us.
ReplyDeleteYour portrait photography is very skillful.
I didn't go to prom either, mostly bc I was misfit.
DeleteA special day, indeed. It's something that has been adopted in UK in recent years, say, 15 years or so.For some young people, it will be the first of only a handful of times that they will dress formally. It's a good rite of passage, I think.
ReplyDeleteIt was very formal. The dress cost a small fortune, and there were flowers and hair and parties. Yikes! The boy rented his suit/tux.
DeleteThe umbrella shot is a real score. Love them all. Yes, the end of an era.
ReplyDeleteI love the umbrella photo especially. It says it all and cements the memory. How very special!
