Feet for all Seasons

If you've been here for awhile . . . and poor you, if you have . . . you will remember Sue's almost catastrophic pre-Christmas faceplant.

It was a bad one, and three months later she still has what I would call subcutaneous bruising, poor thing. I am doubting that it will ever go away, but we remain in hope.

Trying to keep up with Sue, I took my own fall several later, but it was a mild one.

Both falls were a result of us not tying our boots properly. It's not that we don't do this normally, but in both cases we were just poking our noses out the door for a few minutes.

Here are my boots.

You can see why we wouldn't want to lace those bruisers up. We're not completely stupid, and we did stick the extra lacing inside. But the lace from one boot still caught on the hooks of the other boot, and down we went.

Of course, we knew that we would definitely need to find a solution for next winter.

Then Sue found an online sale. Hers are the laced pair, but they are permanently laced and can just be tightened or loosened via a pully thingy. Mine are the non-laced, pull-on brown pair.

But wait! What about those red shoes? They don't look much like winter boots, do they? Well, they were on sale too, and I couldn't resist. They're pretty sharp looking and maybe even snazzier in real life than they look in the photo.

So I am set for summer too.

A man for all seasons, am I.

Your new shoes look snazzy especially those red ones. I see that they are all Merrill too. The pronlem with many of the nylon laces now is that even when properly ties, they loosen, compared to the former cotton ones. Hope that Sue continues to heal.

Ironic that this post should come a day after I re-tied a woman’s boot for her and it was the one with very long laces. She was in front of me at a checkout and when I pointed out the unlaced boot, she said would not be able to bend down to retie it, so I volunteered.

Funny how things stick in your head. Since your posting on your fall due to laces, every time i need to put on my boots I think to myself I must tie them up or risk a “AC” fall.

Hi Judy. I am surprised that you remember.

Yes Beatrice, they are Merrells. We get their emails and every now and then, a good offer comes at the right time. When we have had to return items, there has been no difficulty whatsoever. However, I don't think I would ever purchase an expensive, non-sale item. I am impressed by your good turn.

Those hooks are a royal pain. JG has a pair where one hook sticks. Much heavy breathing and muttering ensues. But he always laces and ties, carefully. Iron ring guys are like that.
So sorry to hear Sue is still bothered. That was nasty.
I have velcro, thank you.

Fall is no fun, I once fell and hurt my lip, bleeding and rushed to the clinic to get an injection. Great that you have found good pairs of boots.

I always lace up my boots when I put them on, because I don't want to end up falling like you describe. Those hooks are dangerous. :-)

I like the red ones. If you fall in snow you can be spotted.

How kind of you. Little things like this make such a difference in a person's day.

Those red shoes are killer! But I am intrigued by Sue's no lace ones. I need to look into that. Merrells for me too. Love my Moabs. I also really like Vionics. They are great if you have problems with plantar fascitis. I had that some years ago and found out about Vionic shoes and sandals.

I have a pair of crocs for just that sort of thing. It also serves as an excuse if anyone wants me to stand around talking for a long time outside during the winter. In the summer, the extra breeze is nice.

P.S. The big advantage of crocs is you don't have to bend down to put them on or take them off.

Rick gave me new shoes for Christmas -- athletic shoes. But I still haven't gone to get them. I was waiting for the weather to get good and now -- it is! I love your shoe collection, especially the red ones.

Face plants are no fun. I don't remember reading that you had any damage from yours but do remember Sue took it pretty bad.
Thanks for your well wishes on my surgery tomorrow.

Great new boots. And I guess the reds will replace your old orange ones...if I remember correctly (which is quite unlikely).

Good solutions. And the red ones! Oh, you kid!

Good idea to get away from the laces. It’s so easy to hurt yourself in a fall. Love the red ones!

I'm always attracted to red shoes too. Like a bird with a shiny thing!

Love the red shoes. I have my Blundstones which I can pull on for a fast look outside. And they have a good tread.

Great looking new shoes. I always double knot mine, just like I did for my kids when they were small. But my next pair will be one of those the permantly laced ones. I recently found I was stepping on and tripping over the bottom edge of my pajamas when I took a midnight bathroom break. I rehemmed them with scissors and iron-on tape. Stay upright friends.

I'm glad you've figured out a solution to the boot danger. And your favorite color shoes on sale! Woo hoo!!

The slip-on ones seem much safer for the “quick jaunt outside” application. Thwart is what I have too, by our back door to allow me to quickly allow our pup to accomplish her “business”. I did not initially get them for “safety” but because I knew they would be always sitting out by the back door….. and I knew I would be aggravated looking at the loose and askew laces as they sat there. We toss all our other shoes in the closet so they are not noticeable…. only the “poop assistant’s” shoes earn a permanent presence in the kitchen. 🙂

“Thwart” was meant to be “that” in the above. Damnable autocorrect. 😞

Falls are so scary as we get older. It's a fear I have that is something I never used to worry about.

Those hooks on boots are irritating. My boots will last another year or two, but after that I'm thinking of non laced boots, simply because I get tired of the laces routinely coming undone.

These were the sorts of boots I wore in the days I hiked mountains with Dad. Nostalgic for me! Sue might need her balance retrained with physio or Pilati

Us elderlies can't be too careful. We are on the ground before our head knows that we are falling.

I too have pull on boots.
