Yesterday, I donned my red-black jacket for our walk. Heaver than a windbreaker but lighter than a winter coat, it seemed the thing to grab for mid-fifties weather. I also wore one glove a la Michaël Jackson — on my heft hand that holds the cane, because it would be continuously exposed. The other hand, I could shove into my pocket at will.
As we continued past the bridge we began to hear music.
I took a few snaps from a distance. The photos were awful with distractions, so I extracted two of the musicians from their compatriots and composited them into a cheesy image. It's terrible, but I unashamedly reveal all here. Well, maybe not all, but I reveal much — both the good and not so good.
We got closer and saw and heard the bagpipes. This is just a few second clip.
A street was blocked for for a march by the three bands, but we found a space on the grounds behind the Legion building where people were gathered and there was seating available. The three bands took their time marching, each finishing its song and march before the next one started. We couldn't see very much, not enough to bother with photos, but we could see some and hear well. It was an unexpected pleasure on a Sunday morning.

Must be that time of year where Scots celebrate their heritage. It's definitely an outdoor music.
ReplyDeleteI wish I could hear this type of music in person. Lovely post!
ReplyDeleteYou were definitely rocking that plaid jacket and one glove with the cane!
ReplyDeleteFall is definitely the season for watching bands for me. I came from Feedly where your video evidently doesn't transport. But when I clicked the link to visit your blog site, it showed up. I'll have to remember that in the future. Thanks again for mentioning Feedly. I am quickly growing attached to it.
ReplyDeleteOh good. I think that are the only person that found it useful.
DeleteI love a jacket like that! It looks great and warm, too. I like watching the MSU marching band practice. It's just fun!
ReplyDeleteI like bagpipes outside. They do not improve a Robbie Burns night dinner. I see what you mean about that one composite, but, hey, you got photos.
ReplyDeleteIt must ahve been a fun listen, even if not a great opportunity for photos! I must laugh a bit at the floating piper and drummer which you've conjured.
ReplyDeleteI love surprises like that! The funny thing is that when we go to concerts, we never pay for the ,'good seats'. We go to hear them not see them!
ReplyDeleteA friend of mine moved back to Nova Scotia after almost 30 years and now? She hears bagpipes weekly. Jealous of your both, ha.
ReplyDeleteI think this was a fun surprise. I like bagpipe music.
ReplyDeleteHow fun! The high school I attended, our mascot The Scots - the sound of bagpipes is very nostalgic.
ReplyDeleteWhat fun! I do love the bagpipes!
ReplyDeleteHow lucky were you to happen upon these bands!
ReplyDeleteI love the pipes and find them very evocative. That could be because several family members have had pipers at their funerals. That glove looks warm!
ReplyDeleteTime to get out that snazzy red jacket!
ReplyDeleteThe skirl of the pipes stirs the soul.
I set up Feedly on your recommendation, and am using it. Thank you.
The bagpipes are such an unexpected nice surprise.
ReplyDeleteI really like that traditional red and black check pattern on your coat. I have a flannel shirt like that and would also like a jacket like yours if I ever spot one.
ReplyDeleteI wonder what a group of bagpipers would be called….. “band” seems too flashy and modern….. maybe a “gaggle” since they can sometimes sound geese-like. 🙂. I actually enjoy bagpipe groups, and your isolated fellow has all the “stereotypes” of the “look” too! Perhaps a “smoker” of pipers? Nah, wrong kind of piper. Haha.
PipeTobacco
What an unexpected delight that must have been. I envy you!
ReplyDeleteIsn’t that the best? When you come upon something like that when its not expected.
ReplyDeleteI do love bagpipes when they are well played. It was excrutiating listening to a beginner practising a block away a few years ago.
ReplyDeleteThat’s really interesting! I’ve never heard the bagpipes played, except in some movies.
