Caturday 70: Lacey Reverts to Winter Habits

Last evening, as is our wont, we were watching TV at suppertime. When I glanced over to Sue, I was taken aback to see Lacey on her lap. This happened twice, once before and once after her supper. Please note: it was jolly AC who fed her supper but Cuppa who got the snuggles.

Lacey had distained laps all summer, but come the change in seasons, she now returns for little visits. She has even condescended to grace moi on a few occasions. While it is cupboard love in hopes of landing a treat or two (which works by the way), it is nice to receive a short, as in very short visit.

Her most recent visit to my lap was on that dreadful morning when good Christians decided that sending a criminal and sexual predator to the oval office was just the ticket.

Lacey's other winter habit is to seek out the afternoon sunshine on our bed with its west- facing window.

"The term "cupboard love" is a British idiom, used most commonly in the United Kingdom. It describes the selfish, greedy or insincere affection displayed towards another person in order to get what they want."  I have usually self-translated cupboard love to mean, please go to the cupboard to fetch me a morsel.

  1. A new phrase for me "cupboard love" - not sure if I will ever use it, but at least I know the meaning. Ah, Lacey, you are so very very feline in your affections...totally self-absorbed!

    1. Mom's parents were British, so the expression was part of her heritage. I have heard it or used it all of my life.

  2. Ah, Lacey. They can be somewhat sensitive, although also self-centered, creatures.

    1. That they are. She loves me until I feed her, then she walks away without a second glance.

    1. I had a brain, with brain cells that fired. I meant to say that our cats are showing winter behaviour now, as well.

  6. Such a pretty cat. And cupboard love is widespread in cats and dogs and humans.

  7. I hope Lacy appreciates that bed cover for more than softness and warmth.

  8. I think that is a common cat thing. They love you best when you're feeding them!

That crocheted coverlet is a real thing of beauty. I can't stop looking at the pattern of it. So much detail to it.

  9. Cupboard love is a great description! I will attempt to remember it for the grand-dog’s next visit!

  10. Thank you for the new phrase. I do the cat care, Mark gets the cat affection. Perhaps it's a cat pattern?

  11. I do not understand those Christians either. Sigh... but maybe it's because I'm Buddhist.
I've never heard that term before.

  12. Maybe the lap visit on Black Tuesday (or early Wed AM?) was for comfort - yours and hers. I know 'cupboard love' - my family used it. But, how about 'It would make a cat laugh', as of something really unfunny.
