Musings from Yesterday

I like two things about commenting with my tablet. One: I can be pretty comfortable in my Lazy Boy. Two: spellcheck can be convenient and usually works better than on the computer. But there are two things that I wish it did better. One: for me, it doesn’t insert apostrophes when I would just like to go on typing the letters. Two: it will not change an i to a capital I in the middle of a sentence when I would prefer to just keep typing letters rather than taking the time to find the shift key.

When it comes to composing a post rather than just commenting, I would rather use the computer, which is an odd thing to write because here I am composing this on my iPad since I am just sitting here letting my mind wander. I will likely finish the post on the computer later.

===================

Along with other games, I play two sudokus on my tablet almost every morning. One is the daily challenge and, for the other round, I ask the app to generate a random Extreme difficulty puzzle. Today (Monday), I set a new personal record on the  Extreme puzzle. I beat my previous high score from March 10 by 300 points. I may never top that because the stars have to align. It needs to be a very difficult puzzle that I, somehow, do well and manage to complete in a good time with no mistakes.

Will I ever top this score from April 21st?
(trying to remember the date)

====================

This week begins the town’s two-week spring window for leaf and yard waste curbside pickup. I wish that they would wait for at least another week because outdoors is still barely workable, and we are not even close to planting season. It's only 5C/41F outside as I write this. Nevertheless, we will make an effort to do a little cleanup this morning, If we do, I will add a pic later.

When we got out there, I decided to try a phone timelapse as an experiment. I actually did three and then spliced together a few bits into one short clip. I can do more directed timelapses with my Canon, but the phone is easy to use. I could probably do a soundtrack if I uploaded to YT first, but I'll just do it the easy way.

====================

After that bit of work, Sue thought we should get a coffee at Tims and follow our usual routine of taking it to the park. We weakened in the drivethru and also ordered breakfast sandwiches and hashbrowns. We've shown many coffee-in-the-car photos, so we didn't take another. We were also too far away to capture the male mallard duck in what remains of the diminishing flooded pond, the one you saw in the sunset photo the other day. At even a greater distance, we could see a redwing blackbird flitting busily about in the bushes right by the river.

====================

The federal election is just a week away, but the advance pools opened for 4 days on Good Friday. We went by in late morning, but they were lined up around the corner. There was less of a line outside when we returned that afternoon, but the inside line still took a half hour.

They were around the corner just a little earlier,
And there were more lines inside.

I have never seen an advance poll so busy. In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever seen any regular poll as busy as this. We owe it all to Trump for getting out the vote. The thinking is that Mr Carney and the Liberals will stand up for Canada against Trump, but that the Cons with Poilievre are really Trumpers at heart and might sell us out. Still, the Cons had a big lead at one time, so we are worried and quite determined to fight for our country.

====================

I was  worried about our tulips. Nothing emerged for a long time, but suddenly on Sunday, they were several inches high. Something has dug up part of the garden, so I think we have lost some bulbs, but it is good to see some old friends making their return. The emergence of the spring bulbs is a wondrous thing to see.

  1. What busy 'beavers' you were! The emergence of life (in all forms) in the spring is just magical, especially after the white world we've had.

  3. That time lapse video exhausted me and so I had to go and have a cup of coffee, but without a breakfast sandwich here at home 😏

  4. The advance polls were quite busy here too which is unusual. People are anxious for sure!

  5. I'm so glad to see you Canadians are voting early, and I hope that your candidate wins. I'm with Beatrice with sharing a coffee while seeing your busy work! Glad you were enjoying breakfast a la river sights.

  6. I love that time lapse video. I smiled as I watched the show. And good luck on your election!

  7. I write all posts on my computer simply because I can type 20 perhaps 30 times faster on it than I can an iPad. I do sometimes comment using my iPad but one can generally see that I limit myself to short responses to the comment. If a comment requires a longer response, I will get up and go use the computer.

    One of the advantages of living in rural America where I do is even when record numbers turn out to vote, a long line for me is maybe one or two people in front of me. The caucuses are quite chaotic but generally I never have to wait in line for them either, I just have to shuffle along with the crowd as we make our way from the speeches to the voting area for our precinct.

    1. We have no speeches on election day. BC campaigning is officially over. Polling stations are also neutral — no signage etc.

  8. Yes, the apostrophe thing is a nuisance. I have an older version of Word (too cheap to upgrade) and so I am p'tting them in by hand. The one that bugs me, though, is the symbol for temperature. I can't find it when I am commenting, on any machine.
    JG is raking the oak leaves that hung on the tree most of the winter. Growling as he goes.
    Brrr. Cold wind still. But my daff shoots are a few inches up.

  9. I hope your elections go the way you wish them to. I think Mark Carney is one of the good guys and won't sell Canada.
    Your time-lapse video was breathless!

  10. Hope your elections will allow smart U.S. folks to come to Canada! We hate what is happening to our country. Our judges should be more consistent about reining in the Idiot's overreach and fellow dingbats. I had some squirrels eat the inner part of bulbs, but not the papery outside. A few that they missed came up the next year. I'd even put a small chicken wire grate over the tulip section, but the squirrels stole them later before fall. Linda in Kansas

  11. Don't you wish all your work only took 21 seconds like the time lapse?! I loved it -- well done! I'm hoping for Carney -- but I can see why you are all worried. I will have no homegrown salads this year. My squirrel rips up the lettuce and spinach seeds every day. If anything ever comes to fruition it will be a miracle (and they even have a grate on top to protect them!)

    I comment on the computer too.

  15. I'm hoping for the best for Canada--a sane choice for leader, unlike here. Sigh. I do games on my phone and blog from my laptop. I don't have a tablet and would have issues with the virtual keyboard. I make SO many mistakes trying to type on one.

  16. Glad the turn out is good for the vote. I can only manage medium sudokus so well done.

  17. My one visit to Canada was to relatives in Toronto and we were amazed to see black squirrels... is this normal? We have grey squirrels here but also the cute little red ones in Scotland where we used to live, and here in Wales. Good luck with your election, all fingers crossed for you. I heard trump is coming to Scotland in July to try and persuade the Royal and Ancient Golf club in St Andrews to let him host the tournaments. Good luck to him, he is up against Scottish Presbyterians!

    1. Our black squirrels are also classified as gray squirrels, so not all of our gray squirrels are gray. I don’t know if they are the same as your gray squirrels. I do know that our reds are not like your reds.

  18. Congrats on the Sudoku high score, and it sounds like a full day—grappling with tablet quirks, braving the chilly spring cleanup, experimenting with timelapse, enjoying a cozy Tims break, witnessing record turnout at the polls, and finally spotting the long-awaited return of your tulips.

  19. In northwestern Canada we won't see tulips until the end of April, I'd bet...however, by then we should also be able to celebrate a "new" PM aka the current one, please. Even here in Alberta there are polls about close races in both Edmonton & Calgary. Fingers crossed.

  20. I hope your neighbor to the south has made all Canadians aware of what can happen should they choose the wrong leader.

  21. Can you not change the settings somehow to automatically capitalise a sole "i".?
    There must be, otherwise a nuisance.
    I also type the full post on my pc.
    and great time-lapse video. I want to do something like that too. looks fun.

  24. I loved the time lapse! I did something like that when our house was being remodeled years ago and it really shows the work being done. Very cool.

    I don't have a tablet nor do I usually write while using my smart phone. I like to be at a keyboard and then be done with things for most of the day.

  30. I enjoyed this—such an honest glimpse into your everyday rhythm. There's something comforting in how you balance small tech annoyances, personal wins like that Sudoku record, and simple pleasures like coffee at the park. It all feels very real and relatable.

  33. I like the timelapse, and good timing from my perspective. I've not used my phone much for that, and I want to do a 2-3 hour timelapse tomorrow night when I'm out at the desert. I did a test run last night, and a one hour time lapse used up about 25-30% of my battery. I really need my phone to navigate back in the dark and can't afford to use up all my battery power. Looks like I'm going to need to take a small portable charger with me.

  34. Boy you worked fast on that tidy-up! Glad you got your well deserved reward.

  35. Speaking of apostrophes, especially those used in conjunctions, I often lately skip them without, it seems, any reduction in a reader's understanding of exactly what word is meant. Why "wasnt" it done this way in the first place? I dont think it wouldve been such a bad idea.
