After the Lord Mayor's Show

Sue's grandad, when he was playing cribbage with his son who was also Sue's dad, often said, "After the Lord Mayor's show comes the garbage wagon." Of course, he would say this after he had been dealt a poor hand after a good one. He was being polite because I think the actual expression used a word other than garbage.

In our case, after the day of the croci, we had a most awful storm. We not only got inches of heavy, wet snow, but it was blowing a hoolie out there.

One thing about dense, wet snow is that it sticks to the trees, and it looks quite pretty. I took this from my den window shortly after arising.

The neighbour across the way was out there shovelling but the
driveway contractors did come by later.

We thought that we would brave the weather to get a few more snow-on-trees photos, but oh my dog! the wind was absolutely fierce.

Because we have done this composition several times recently to measure the snow, Sue had me pose here once again. By the way, the core of the winter snow pile is still there underneath the new stuff.

We have a sign supporting the local Liberal candidate, but some have been vandalized.
The snow plow sign will be removed next week.

Sue still had her phone out, but mine was stuck in my pocket, so I suggested that she could take a photo of the neighbours' flag by the snowy tree.

Is there a metaphor here about standing strong and proud through the storms?

We walked south instead of the usual north which normally takes us to the park. I am sure that some of the trees in the park would have looked good in the snow, but south is a shorter to get a road and tree photo. The first one looks east along Lake Ave while  the second is kitty-corner to the first.

We soon turned tail and headed for home because the weather was downright miserable and nasty.

  1. Good grief. Will winter ever be done with us this year? We had snow overnight too.

  2. Cribbage is one of those games that is rapidly dying off. I don't know anyone my age or even 20 years older that knows how to play it. If I want a game of cribbage, I must travel down to the senior center to play with those in their 80's or more.

  3. That looks freezing! We had cold temperatures but nothing like that!
Cribbage? I have heard if it but don't know how to play.
    Stay warm, AC!.

  4. My godfathers, it looks so cold. You're very brave - or just very Canadian.

  5. yes, yesterday was a real misery. The snow and ice are crashing off my multi level roof in great chunks today. Let it roar!

It took 3 times before blogger let me comment here today.

  7. My father played cribbage but I never learned. I think it was considered a 'mans game'. Spring hasn't sprung here but we don't have that. Winter does not want to leave you.

  8. We too received snow (sigh), but you received more than we did. It is NOT unusual, of course….. BUT it feels SO, SO disheartening. I have become less “tolerant” of snow as I have aged. I have to figure out mentally how to retrain my mindset to LOVE snow and Winter again. I do not know how to do so yet, but it would help make next year better if I can figure it out.

  9. Have you changed your comments to “moderated”? They used to post immediately for me, but the last two days….. they do not post and I worry I did something wrong. But, now I looked at yesterday’s post and it (my comment) did finally show up.

    1. I hope that it is a temporary change to help deal with spam. I hate moderation.

    2. Oh, you have been receiving a lot of spam?!? Ugh. That is a logical reason for certain to moderate comments. I was just worried I was doing something wrong as the comments started acting differently.

  11. I love the Canadian flag photo, so bold with all the snow! I hope I can remember the saying "After the Lord Mayor's show comes the garbage wagon." to use for my own - but that's a mouthful!

  12. Well, at least the sun is melting it today. Yeah, that was one doolie. And I love the comment - quite sure it was not "garbage".

  13. What a lot of snow! It does look pretty! And you are to be commended for going out into the elements, to capture the beauty!

  14. Make it STOP! And your pile was doing so well. I do love the photo of the flag in the snow!

  15. The snow we had yesterday didn't amount to anything except to make the pine tree boughs pretty for a bit. You got a lot for a spring snow.

  17. AC…. I saw your comment at Liz’s blog, so I thought I would ask you too…. because I believe you mentioned you do have Amazon Prime (I think you mentioned that anyhow)…..
I do not know if I have ever asked you this before… but do you by chance watch either of these Sky Arts programs from GB:

    Portrait Artist of the Year
    or
    Landscape Artist of the Year

? I ask because my wife and I absolutely LOVE both series and are fortunate to find we can view them on Amazon Prime here in the US. We first saw one season of Portrait Artist that was shown on our PBS channel, and we loved it back then. We relish each episode and our routine now is to watch an episode while we eat a special Sunday Morning breakfast together each week.

I imagine if you have AP that it would then be available on AP in Canada too. It is such a fun show…. sort of like Great British Bake-off…. but of painters. It really is a wonderfully intriguing, gentle, inspiring show. Probably either would be my favorite television show to watch each week.

  18. Wow, I am embarassed to have ever complained about my weather. I haven't played cribbage since my over 50 year old kids were under 6. I should try teaching my grandkids.

  19. The snow is still so dense. Such a cold winter you had.

  20. You are much braver than I am, really. It was in the 20s yesterday and the wind was fierce here as well. We did not get a lot of snow. Just a dusting. That was bad enough, I tell you. Your weather would have done me in, I'm afraid. Nothing wrong with winter, but it needs to stick to the winter months.

I'm getting plenty of spam too. Jessie, someone hawking hoodies, Rajana is back, and some travel company.
