Danica Refuses the Addicition

Speaking of kids and coffee, as I was in a recent post when JJ took Sue out, I mentioned that neither of the grands drink coffee.

Danica is quite adamant about it because she was not impressed when Sue and I suffered from coffee-withdrawal headaches after the derecho event two summers past.

We and the whole town were without power for three days (or was it four?) and we couldn't make coffee. We could not get enough heat from the old side burner on the grill, and the little generator that we keep in the car for tire mishaps wasn't up to the task either. After a day or three, Shauna did get us to her workplace in Perth, and we got our fix.

Anyway, Danica was not impressed by our addiction and its concomitant headaches, and is, therefore, not keen to become fall prey to drug abuse, like her junkie grandparents.

I found the Derecho Saga post and had forgotten the part where we were eventually able to purchase propane canisters for our old camp stove. It was also three years ago in May, not just the two years that I had posted above.

  1. How quickly time passes. It doesn’t feel that long ago, AC.

  2. I'm with Danica. I have enough other issues -- I don't need coffee either!

  3. I see many people addicted to caffeine throughout my daily interactions. I guess it is better than other addictions such as smoking or painkillers, but it still can have a withdrawal process if one has to go without.

  4. I finally let go of my camp stove about 8 years ago when I moved into this apartment (would that I had kept it when no elec. for weeks after Helene.) I remember as a kid thinking coffee smelled so good when my mom would perk two cups each morning. She let me taste black coffee. It took another 10 years until I was working and someone gave me coffee with cream and sugar. I was definitely hooked then! However, now my cuppa each morning is just coffee with honey.

  5. Funny how the old blog entries correct our memory of how much time has passed.

  6. I wasn't reading your blog back then, but it sounds a bit like our director experoence in 2011. No power for 9 days, and temps in the 90s even at night so no one really wanted hot drinks. We have a gas stove and hot water hester, and at that time had a gas fridge heater, so we were okay except for the extreme heat and humidity.

  7. I have never gotten into the coffee habit and only have regular tea on Sundays. Caffeine keeps me awake at night.

  9. I have my mocha every morning but haven't had any withdrawal headaches when I don't. I don't think I actually need coffee; I just enjoy the ambiance.

  10. My husband is trying to wean himself off a caffeinated beverage in the afternoons. Bless him. He still gets some tea in the mornings!

  11. Oh, I know that headache. But without coffee I would never have passed a single university exam, I am sure. Or got anything in on time. We were all that sure once, weren't we. Note Village Treats info in previous comment. Danica could drink chocolate which is, of course, not addictive. Yeah.

  12. Every time we had an electrical outtage I thanked my lucky self for having a camping coffee pot and a gas stove! Of course, that still didn't solve the water problem. The well needs electricity to pump.

  13. I had that headache when I went to 'un' leaded coffee and now I am free from that. I do enjoy my flavored decaf coffee.
When we were without power for days in 2007, we made coffee on the camp burner phone. However it was not during cold weather so we didn't suffer from the cold, we suffered from the heat!
