Powerless but Prideful

Sunday came with more cold, more rain and more wind.

And then the lights went out.

But he had been forewarned of a planned power outage, and I had downloaded a Shetland book, so I could listen offline.

That occurred at 7 o'clock. Around 10:30 we were off the the restaurant for a brunchy breakfast. It wasn't all that good. Next time we'll go back to our slightly pricier, favourite place. We did eat there this time because it isn't very capacious, and we thought it would be pretty crowded on Sunday.

It took awhile to be served, so we barely made it to the raising of the Pride flag at noon. We have a gay child and are, therefore, allies of the gay community.

There were a few brief speeches, and one speaker mentioned how much the flag-raising meant to him, for he has suffered from hate and oppression due his orientation.

Sue and town councillor, Linda, were well adorned.

The poodle was dressed for the occasion.

I was separated from Sue during the brief ceremony, but she took this photo of me from a distance. You can see that I have a rainbow bow on my hat. You can also see that I look dour. It's just my look. I can't help it.

I decided to take a selfie while the flag was being raised in the background. It was just about at the top of the pole when I captured this.

And last but not least, Sue made a collage.

When we got home, the power was still out, so I read/listened to more of my Shetland book until the power was restored at 3pm.

Then, the surge suppressor wouldn't stop beeping. Somehow, the outage fried it, or perhaps it was the resumption of power. I will have to purchase a new one, but a fried surge suppressor is better than a fried computer.

  1. Yes indeed. A cheap surge protector did very little for my old laptop once when I was out of town. Gone. Laptop, I came back! Yay for y'all's Pride support. Loved seeing the wild outfits.

  8. I like the selfie with the flag and Sue looks her usual fabulous! Love the dog too -- that's a lovely community event. I hear you on the power. Sometimes a good book (especially a Shetland book!) would be the best thing ever in a windy, cold zone! (We should NOT still be wearing flannel or fleece in June, but I have been for a few days! Warming up now, so I hope it comes your way.)

  9. Very colourful and jolly. I like your selfie.
I was always accused of looking miserable, but it's just the way my face is made. It's better when I smile, sometimes.

  11. I keep a rainbow painted rock on my front porch all the time. I have a niece and nephew (actually siblings) who are both gay and married to their first loves.
Nice to read of the celebration in your town.

  13. For the first time, pride flags will be flying around the state capitol for the month of June in Hawaii. Although we have had official observances, flags raised and the like in the past, Just never at the capitol for the whole month. As far as I'm concerned, treating one another with courtesy is the only way! I like your smile. The only thing I will not tolerate is intolerance. Blessings to you and your child

  14. It sounds like a chilly, eventful Sunday filled with small disappointments and meaningful moments, especially the Pride flag-raising, which must have felt particularly personal and powerful given your family's connection.

  15. Lots of energy in the parade. Some things are better for the community but there's still a long way to go for a "normal" acceptance in the community.

  16. Love the celebration and the rainbows everywhere! Unfortunately, Pride has become controversial here due to our current national administration. That won't hold back us Washingtonians though.

  17. Nashua, NH, will be hosting a Pride parade later this month and hopefully it sill be warmer and drier than last year’s event.

  21. Would that all parents were as supportive of their gay children. My son loves his daughter and her partner, but he still struggles with it.

  22. We once had a premier in Alberta (Rachel Notley) who celebrated pride, but not since then. Why is compassion political?
