When our girls were young, Sue began a tradition of giving the non-birthday girl one little gift on the birthday girl's special day. We have continued this with the grands.
Except this year, the gift wasn't all that little. It didn't cost us anything, but it was a keeper — literally (and when I say literally, I mean literally, not figuratively as in the modern misuse lol).
It's my mother's sterling silver dresser set that Sue has kept for all of these years and which I, being male, didn't even know that we had.
Of course, Danica wasn't at all pleased.
After cake, the girls went to Danica's room to lay out the set on a doily which also came from great grandma.
And Danica learned how to use the mirror while she brushed.
I am very happy that Sue thought to pass this heirloom, which was important to my mother, to the great granddaughter that she missed by four years.
Heirlooms are wonderful. I have so few to pass on.
ReplyDeleteNice tradition to give something to the non-birthday person too. And how special that Danica has an heirloom that one belonged to her great grandmother.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful gift! And I can't see the excitement at all. AT All AT All!!
ReplyDeletewhat a very, very nice 'hand-me-down'. :)
ReplyDeleteYou know your family heirlooms are in good hands with Sue, eh? So sweet that she held onto your mothers dresser set for her and passed it along at just the right time. The photos are precious. They literally melted my heart.
ReplyDeleteI'm just messing with you on that last line. ;) It's one of my pet peeves, also.
A lovely gesture with a beautiful outcome
ReplyDeleteSpecial indeed!!! Love that Sue did this! We also have the same tradition.
ReplyDeletehughugs
that is so very sweet!
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of passing on family treasures. I had 2 sons.... so they didn't really appreciate all the feminine treasures. But now I have a granddaughter, so I'm hoping that I can pass some precious bits and pieces to her eventually.
ReplyDeleteLove those pics of Danica, she will look after her present I'm sure.
A perfect remembrance of your mother. Such a sweet and thoughtful gift.
ReplyDeleteOoooh! Now THAT is a treasure! I love the photo of her & the mirror.
ReplyDeleteThat is the sweetest gift and the photos are lovely. It's too bad she didn't like them at all ;-)
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful set! And what a wonderful idea. I've always taken gifts to older children when I go to see a new baby and baby gets a gift. But I never thought of doing the same for birthdays. Danica and Jj's memory banks will be overflowing someday just with remembrances of their grandma.
ReplyDeleteKudos to Sue for passing on a family heirloom. Those are the things that live on, even in our hearts. Danica will treasure it forever, I'm sure!
