Yes, credits are needed for the hungry, but for some reason, I began to wonder about British pizza. It seems that whenever I see people passing around pizza on British telly, the slices are very thin and cardboardy stiff. I assume that it is a prop for tv, but when they are already spending gazillions of £ on production, why don't they get a realistic pizza? I mean there is surely good and proper pizza in the UK. Yes?
I no longer purchase chips on a regular basis although I do miss them greatly. I don't mind various flavours including the occasional Salt & Vinegar, but we usually purchase plain because that's what Sue favours. I guess I favour flavourless too, but I am also apt to enjoy other flavours. Of the various flavour options, I probably most enjoy Sour Cream & Onion.
Ketchup chips are available in Canada, but they aren't my preference. I understand that they are not widely available in the US, or perhaps I am wrong. I have heard the same about All Dressed in the US. Our grands seem to like All Dressed, and I don't mind them but probably not as much as other flavours.
There are a lot of favours and flavours in this post, now what flavour do you favour? And don't forget my pizza musing if you have something to add. Tell me that Brits can get thick, gooey pizza. It’s the land of my ancestors after all, and I presume many current relations of whom I know nothing, and I am concerned for them. lol

You have me curious now. I have had Greek, Italian, Chicago, New York and good old Midwestern pizza but have not been exposed to British pizza other than a Pizza Hut I ate at in London on a date with my now wife many years ago. What are the characteristics of a British pizza?
ReplyDeleteMy wife, perhaps due to her years in England, likes Salt and Vinegar and I don't find them bad at all but like you, my favorite is Sour Cream & Onion. I have seen Ketchup chips but they aren't widely available. I have not seen or heard of All Dressed but I'm assuming that is likely similar to Everything versions which I have seen. I try to avoid highly processed foods so don't eat them but only rarely these days.
Ah, he speaks of pizza and chips. Lent is coming, perhaps there's a historic theme of less indulgence. But I'll gladly have thin crust with just mushrooms...none of this bready stuff please. And chips with sour cream flavor are my fav. But when you move into corn chips - a bit of Doritos would be preferred, and not with hot stuff either. Dip with guacamole or mild salsa. Enjoy the game (these are great snacks for watching Olympics!)
ReplyDeleteI like thin crust pizza. I also like bready pizza crust. And in between. I don't eat chips, but if I do it's the plain old regular.
ReplyDeleteWe haven't had pizza for a very long time. They do tend to be thin and hard, from what I remember. As for chips, which we call crisps, I like ready salted or salt and vinegar, but again, they're something we rarely have.
ReplyDeleteI haven't had pizza since this summer and after finishing the last chips bag I just haven't had the urge for any.
ReplyDeleteI bag is too much for one person at least for me.
Choice? Hmmm, regular old fashioned rippled chips.
I lived in Europe some years ago, and had pizza in Italy, several places. I've never had their equal, and after moving back to the US it took a couple years before I'd even try one again.
ReplyDeleteSour cream and onion crisps. Pizza we like a med. crust!
ReplyDeleteI love salt and vinegar and sour cream and onion chips. I've never heard of the other varieties. I can't have them in the house as I'm too fond of salty crunchy foods. :) I like pizza with a medium to thicker crust. I guess I prefer bread like crusts to cracker like.
ReplyDeletePlain low salt chips from Covered Bridge are the favorite in this house, But we rarely eat them, maybe once a year.
ReplyDeleteWhat are you talking about, John? "Plain" chips have plenty of flavour! I'm with Sue, they're my favourite. The extra crispy Miss Vickie's are the best, but I refuse to pay $4.50 or more for a bag of them in our local Co-op store. It makes it easy to pass them by for health reasons. Only in moments of weakness will I succumb. -Kate
ReplyDeleteI like a thin crust pizza and will eat any chip but prefer the plain ones.
ReplyDeleteI agree on the pizza, and I prefer sour cream and onion chips, though we never buy chips.
ReplyDeleteYou've reminded me we have a brand new pizza place opening up here soon, Slice House. I can't wait to try it. I don't often have chips, although yum. I go plain mostly, maybe BBQ or sour cream & onion - for a family BBQ of course you must buy all 3 kinds!
ReplyDeleteYou can get thin and thick crust in the UK but in Italy, - the home of pizza? - it's all thin crust.
ReplyDeleteI've never seen ketchup chips here in the US. I usually buy BBQ flavor chips when I do buy them, which isn't often.
ReplyDeleteLots of cheese, and the rest is optional. The softer crust needs a knife and fork; the 'thin' crust is pickupable. Um, so I just made that word up.
ReplyDeleteI love sour cream and anything chips, but also salt and vinegar and that is JG's so we more often have that.
We are still eating anniversay leftovers here. I do love my daughters.
Brits can get thick, gloriously gooey pizza
ReplyDeleteI do love pizza! My favourite is vegetarian...but without the olives! LOL! Salt and vinegar potato chips...it really depends on how much vinegar is in them, and I have to say that I don't eat potato chips often. If there is a lot of vinegar I am not a fan.
ReplyDeleteIf I do indulge, I prefer Miss Vickie's salt and malt vinegar. Malt vinegar is used a lot in England, if I am not mistaken, for their "chips"...french fries. In England they call potato chips crisps. LOL!
I am happy that Miss Vickie's is sold here in Montreal, Canada.
I rather like paprika flavoured crisps! Also ready salted. For pizza, I am firmly in the Italian corner but I do sometimes like a fluffy Domino’s
ReplyDeleteI do not have potato chips often. As I mentioned before, we do have Ketchup chips but they do not seem popular. For me, when I “chip” I prefer either (like you) sour cream and onion….. or plain.

To me…. all pizza is good pizza…. just some better than others. But, as it is one of two foods I tend to overeat when available….. I try to not be around pizza often.
ReplyDeletePipeTobacco
We didn't have pizza when we went to England so no help there. I'm a fan of thin, crispy crust. When Rick makes pizza it's thicker crust, which as requires utensils -- at least till half eaten! I'm a salt and vinegar woman -- or if plain, kettle chips!
ReplyDeleteIf I'm purchasing a single serving bag for myself it will be BBQ chips. Otherwise it's lightly salty or light on fat potato chips. Dan goes for Fritos!
ReplyDeleteWe have lost our preference for thick crust pizza. The thin crust is good with me!
ReplyDeleteI never tried pizza in England but remember on several occasions seeing folks eating pizza with a side of chips (fries.) We rarely buy potato chips but I do like the salt and vinegar ones. In England we once had some potato chips (crisps) that were labeled Roast Chicken and that's exactly what they tasted like. Yummy!
ReplyDeleteWhat we see on the shelves might have to do with our Idiot messing them up. I saw chocolate covered chips last year. Bleh. I've never seen catsup chips. I don't eve dip my chips in catsup. I like barbeque chips, cuz, well, Kansas City has the best barbeque stuff. Linda in Kansas
ReplyDeleteWe like chips, but as a rule, do not buy them because we would scarf them down, so tend to over indulge when they are available at gatherings or part of a lunch meal. The crispier the better, but ketchup chips are a no. There are a couple of really good pizza places in Nashua, NH, if you should ever visit…our treat too😋
ReplyDeleteI had the best pizza I have ever eaten in London. It was thin, fresh...and had an egg in the middle. Absolutely hands down delicious. It was in a tiny Italian restaurant just across from King's Cross.
ReplyDeleteAs for chips, my preference is plain, but I do really like dill pickle flavored. Here in WV we have a 304 chip that is a cross between sour cream & onion and barbecue. They are okay, but a little too flavorful for me. I also love the salt and vinegar chips. I should add, chips and pizza are very rarely in our diet.
I never had a pizza in the UK when growing up. I'm wondering if they were even available back then. Nowadays? I don't have a clue about them. Husband just brought home a pizza from Costco. It was huge so we quartered it and put the rest in the freezer after sharing one quarter. Much to our surprise it was really good. As for potato chips, I used to have a 'crisp' buttie, two thick delicious slices of bread still warm from the oven when bought, with lashings of butter and crisps/potato chips in between. Loved them as a kid. Haven't had potato chips in a long, long time but I sure am hankering for them now.
ReplyDeleteI am a thin and crispy girl for pizza (Australian here) - don't like it too doughy and the flavours should stand out, not be mush. I had pizza in the US and all I can say is waaay too much cheese. Salt and vinegar for the win with chips (also don't have them as often as my wont - or is that want?) - we also used to have a fantastic Tomato flavour although what is offered these days isn't the Red Seal deal - and we have a flavour called "BBQ" which can be interesting.
ReplyDeleteThere's a place near my home that is owned by an East Coaster. I like their Canadian or Hawaiian pizzas.
