- October 23, 2025 was National Boston Cream Pie Day in the USA; there are a lot of weird days down there. I may have only had this dubious delicacy once, and I had never heard of it until our Sunday School class went out for a restaurant lunch. I could have been 9 years old, or maybe 8 or 10. A friend raved about Boston Cream pie, so I looked forward it. Disappointingly, it turned out to be cake and not pie at all. This was a major blow to a young boy who had only known apple pie in his brief life, and this was most definitely not that.
- When I wrote, above, that there are multiple American observance days on every calendar day, here is the October 24 list, which, for all I know, may not even be exhaustive: National Bologna Day, Black Thursday, Food Day, Global Champagne Day, National Good & Plenty Day, and National Tripe Day.
- Locally, at the grocery store, we were rather shocked to see a bag of hard boiled eggs on offer. Yup! Cooked, de-shelled, and in a bag. So you don’t have to go to the bother of boiling them, don't you know.
- This ↓ seems to happen an awful lot: hypocritical right-wingers getting caught with their pants down as it were. While I am sure all political persuasions have their evil-doers, as far as I can tell most don't feign virtue in the very sin in which they wallow.
- When this camera image appeared on some feed or other, I grabbed it, for it was the first camera that I ever used. It was my mother's camera, but I remember purchasing a roll of film.
- Then I found myself looking back into my old photo album, and I believe that this was from the very first film that I ever purchased and shot in May 1960 when I was still just 12 years old. My friends (Neil, Peter, Nelson and Brian from left to right) and I visited the little airfield where mostly 2 and 4-seater Cessna's flew. Nelson was my bestie, and we renewed acquaintances in our 50s after living thousands of miles apart. For whatever reason, we later drifted apart again. My apartment dwelling isn't shown, but it was very close to the farthest apartment in the left background and just around the corner from it.
I leave you with this deep thought.

I never keep track of those days. Too many as you noted. Cute cartoon there at the end.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I've ever had Boston Cream Pie. Is it good?
ReplyDeleteI don't think that I've had it since. I think it was fine, but it wasn't pie. lol
DeleteI have had this and it is delicious, DJan.
DeleteYes, a Brownie was our first camera as well. Though my father had had a movie camera from well before that (Keystone 8 mm.) I've still got that one! Loved the shot of the friends and the airfield. What a great place to see planes!
ReplyDeleteA comment you made about lost wallets on granny Sue's site has me scratching my head. "We changed the Tile in it after we got home. We had let the battery run down, so the app wasn't doing us any good." What is a wallet lost got to do with Tile and battery and app?
DeleteGoogle is our friend in need and indeed.

Days of proclamation lost their significant years ago and so I never even pay attention. You may only be aware that National days of proclamation are only the tip of the iceberg. States have their own set and even individual towns as well. My town made the regional news when they proclaimed it gay marriage day in the spring which and vigorously defended at the time. Then a few short months later, the city council was forced to proclaim a day for traditional marriage which ruffled a lot of feathers of the previously mentioned defenders. I did my part in keeping the peace by observing neither one.
ReplyDeleteOur family camera was a brownie box, and I remember the clunk of the shutter and having to remember to wind the film before the next shot. Six pictures to a roll, 120 film, whatever that means.
ReplyDeleteI love those photo archives! Tripe day? I'll pass.
ReplyDeleteJust amazing how photography has changed!
ReplyDeleteHow fantastic that you have a photo of your friends :). I remember a camera my Dad had (1970's) with a pull through type of film, you had to use a coater stick on the photo afterwards. The smell was quite strong and the whole process seemed VERY complicated to me.
ReplyDeleteI don't know who comes up with those days but they are publicized. I haven't heard of them. I enjoy looking at photos from times long past. My own and others. I agree with Steve.
ReplyDeletearen't publicized.
DeleteThat photo of your friends is a treasure.
ReplyDeleteYes, there is a national day for everything here. LOL Don't think I would buy those eggs. That was the first camera in our house as well. Love your photo from when you were 12. As for the low life scum that sang for the "thing" you are right. It seems like it is mandatory for maga. Starting with the "thing"
ReplyDeleteYesterday was National Black Cat Day and I didn't recognize Mari. I hope she isn't miffed! My late husband had a Brownie and some other old cameras; I gave them away. I wasn't dating John at the time. He would have wanted me to sell them because I'm sure they were worth some money to a collector. Oh, well!
ReplyDeleteI don't think I have had Boston Cream pie. Love the Brownie.
ReplyDeleteMy father had that very camera. Most of our childhood photos from the early to mid fifties were taken with it. I still have MANY negatives safely stored.
ReplyDeleteI am wondering when I put the album togther. I think it was a very long time ago, maybe in my teenage years??
DeleteI have had Boston cream pie. It is delicious.
ReplyDeleteYou had me at National Bologna Day. Who knew?
