I wonder where the wonder went?

We're home after a very busy and unrelaxing time at the cottage. Very shortly after we arrived home yesterday, I glanced out the door and beheld ...

... a fantastic rainbow. I could see the whole arch (or almost). It took me awhile to spot the higher and less bright double rainbow (sorry for the poor shot). Having only seen such a sight once in my entire life, ten years ago on our trip out west, I was enthralled.

I drove to the grocery store and was delighted that the rainbows remained. However, I was surprised and even disappointed that so many people were taking it so casually as I strolled through the parking lot hardly able to divert my eyes from this gift in the heavens.

I can't help but wonder where the sense of wonder went?

  1. Nothing of such natural beauty seems to matter to most folks any more, it seems. That is an amazing photo. I have only seen a double one once in my lifetime also. Get rested up now and ready for the kiddos.

  2. It is really sad, isn't it. We saw a wonderful double on our trip in May. We were in a restaurant and the kid serving us told us as we were leaving that it was really good and not to miss it. I loved that.

  3. It's either they don't care or everyone and his aunt are taking photos and blocking the beauty! It's a weird world.

  4. Honey we see 'em constantly. I'm evil -- I don't get that lovely sense of wonder other people do with rainbows and stars and sunrises and sunsets. However, I do love kittens.

That's a nice photo, not a poor shot at all!

PS you ought to go to youtube and see the dude who totally freaks out over a double rainbow. I think the man sucked up everyone's wonder for miles around -- maybe that's where the wonder went. He channeled it.

    Oh, what the heck--it's perfect.

  6. Folks don't take the time to appreciate the natural beauty all around - that's why. Everyone is in a big hurry to do this and get there and so they miss out on something as wonderful as a rainbow. We always look for them after a summer rain. Truly amazing, AC.

Wow... that is an amazing photo. We experienced one quite recently over our house as well. Quite something to behold. I too find it hard to believe that most are not moved by such a sight.

  11. Please excuse first attempt to write:-
"I must admit, whenever I spy a rainbow, my first reaction is to stand stock still and make the most of it for as long as it lasts . Good job I never get behind the wheel of a car, eh? A raimbow could prove fatal! Your double one was a humdinger..."

  15. Beautiful! You did well to get that much arch in one picture. That is always my problem and I end up stitching pictures together. I have never seen a double rainbow.

This brought 2 things to mind:

This video (that someone else mentioned) where a guy goes a little overboard with the wonder: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXI_kJjGy44

And a song on Sarah McLachlan's new album called "Bring on the Wonder" - my favourite song on the album (it's a cover song written by someone else, but I've only heard Sarah sing it).

Sorry about the repeat - not sure why that happens, but sometimes on your blog I find that it responds so slowly when I submit a comment, that I hit submit again and it doubles up.
