Caufield and Carney

Sue is usually in bed when I watch my hockey games, or at least she is for the part that goes beyond 9pm.

Being a considerate sort of fellow, I keep the noise down. When a dramatic last-minute goal seals the win for my Montreal Canadiens, I have been known to simply pimp my fists and issue a silent scream.

But I yelled and whistled on Thursday night, when Cole Caufield, scored his 50 the goal of the season. No Montreal player had accomplished this feat in 36 years, and only 6 others Canadien payers have scored 50 goals in their 117 illustrious years.

There aren't many 5'7" players who can survive in the extremely rugged NHL, but Caufield has thrived after being passed over by 14 teams in his draft despite setting goal-scoring records in college. Good for him.

Noteworthy on that historic evening was our prime minister, Mark Carney, in the stands. And he was, indeed, in the stands and not hidden in a luxury box enclosure. Although a couple of seats around him remained empty, he seemed to be sitting amongst ordinary people and not surrounded by twenty secret service agents.

As a tallish sorta guy, I am happy to report that I was able to respect and admire two diminutive but stalwart men in one single evening.

  1. I'd have pimped my fists, as well. I'm not a hockey person, but great excitement.

  2. Well done to that young man. It's good to see the PM enjoying life, too.

  3. That is awesome! Here's a weird take on our hockey fandomship. We are Oilers fan's, probably one of the few that live south of the border.

  4. I love that! A huge accomplishment! And Carney picked the right day to be at the game. I like that he appears to be relatively unguarded (unless those two fellows are security incognito!)

  5. Congratulations to Cole, and even sweeter that he's been underestimated. Refreshing to see your Prime Minister sitting with the common folk!

  6. Trust me, from my brother whose job entailed often being around US presidents: ALL those surrounding people are security. They dress to fit in. I'm glad he was at that particular game, and he and the player are giants in the ways that matter.

  7. I wish we could have Carney here. I've seen comparisons of Carney to Pete Buttigieg. Intelligent, unflappable, well-spoken, so unlike our current president. I can never follow the puck in hockey; it's so fast! I have the same issue figuring out where the ball is in soccer. LOL

  8. My daughter likes watching sports but I've never been into any of them.

  9. Well done both Caulfield and Carney. Now... Let's Go Blue Jays!

  10. Interested in the comment about Carney's surrounds being 'dressed to fit in'. Maybe better not to know, eh? We have physical separation of the TV and the wife in this house. Works well.

  11. During the old 6 team league the Canadiens were a force to be respected.

  12. So warmed by the fact that our country's leader is an authentic person and bona fide leader.
Meanwhile in Alberta, our "so-called" provincial leader, Danielle Smith, hides at hockey games in luxury boxes sponsored by private health care and flies to Saudi Arabia aboard private planes to.... discuss poverty, apparently. Insert barf emoji here.

  13. I wish I was “into” any sort of team sports…. but though I have tried, it has not happened. If I were to say, I tend to appreciate soccer the most, followed by hockey, and then baseball. I can watch those games with mild interest. Basketball and (American) football are sadly not even able to capture a modicum of my attention/interest…. even though I have sincerely tried.

As I mentioned before, I DO find some sports very interesting to watch, but they are mostly sports of individuals (track & field, skiing, snowboarding, gymnastics, motor bikes, Formula 1, and even, dare I say it…. golf). I am not sure why, but it is so for me.

I have many relatives (my oldest sister, and my wife and my MIL are three examples) who are VERY into team sports and will “hoot and holler” at games out of their enthusiasm.

I very much appreciate the “Canadian” mindset of your Prime Minister not apparently needing “special accommodations” nor secret service protection. I wish we, your Southern (somewhat, though some of us are East and West of you, technically) neighbors had a more kind, calm, less hostile attitude.

  15. I'm not a huge sports fan, but you made me happy for you. And I'm all for shorter people to get recognition and accomplish their goals.

  16. That's pretty cool, on both counts!

  17. Glad to hear that you and Mark know the right team to cheer for!
