The time had come to get our tires changed — all season tires off, snow tires on. Following one of my shorter nights — only 4:40 according to Sleepwatch — I needed a coffee. I drove through the drive through on my way to the garage.

It wasn't my first caffeine hit of the day, but it was the first good one and only the second overall.
In an effort to economize, we recently switched from the increasingly expensive Belgian Chocolate mix that we had been consuming for years to a big can of Tim Hortons, which was satisfactory. But, when Tim's coffee was no longer on a good sale, we opted to try a well-known, ubiquitous, cheap brand that shall not be named, but I will say that it comes in a predominately blue packaging. Said brand is not very good on the first drop, never mind the last one.
So that is why I went through the drive through, after which I drove to the garage, handed them my keys, sat down and revelled in sipping my drink while I waited.
There were four other fellas waiting for their tire change, and like me, they were all on their phones. It seems that not so very long ago, I would have picked up whatever magazines were on offer to pass the time. Now, waiting rooms can save the cost of most magazine subscriptions. Mind you, providing us with wireless is an expense.
Meanwhile, movie filming was transpiring on main street. Pamela Anderson is a vaguely recognizable name to me. I don't know the fella, but apparently is name is Michael Cera, and also, apparently, I should know who he is.
Interesting to see a movie being filmed in town. Not a common experience in more rural parts of Canada.

DeleteI hadn't thought about it for a long while since I almost always bring a book to these sorts of places, but I can't recall the last time I saw a magazine, even in the waiting room of a doctor. I guess your options are the blaring television, your phone or for the odd duck like me, a book.
ReplyDeleteI've seen all there is to see of Pamela Anderson and I mean that quite literally. I guess it is nice to see that even such a scandal can be moved past with some time.
I don't entirely miss the waiting room magazines, ten year old Field and Stream, thumbed Popular Mechanics, maybe ancient Highlights for Children.
ReplyDeletePamela Anderson is popular again, but for acting these days and not the other. She's reinvented herself! She now lives on Vancouver Island, I think. I know Michael Cera from Arrested Development. What is the blue package coffee? I'm curious. I'm debating about whether to have my winter tires put on the car. It's kind of a pain and the Subie does OK in the snow without that. (better with though!)
ReplyDeleteI did my tire change just before Halloween when my mechanic called and said to bring the car in and he would do it right then.
ReplyDeleteAh, nothing different for my little car’s tires for the winter…though there are two new ones just put on the front, driving wheels! They are doing a good job…my mileage for the first 300 miles of my trip gave me 35 mpg…much better than my usual in-town rate. For a 17 year old car, I’m happy!

ReplyDeleteSo glad I don't have to do the tire change anymore. That coffee helps with the wait though. I lived in a small town in N. ID. when a movie was made. Dante's Peak was the movie. The photos are beautiful. Have a nice day.

ReplyDeleteA couple years ago I was waiting at a tire shop and noticed that in this one, all the guys were talking. It was so pleasant, and I heard some funny tales. Most waiting rooms here have Fox News on, which I find absolutely infuriating. If I can, I change the channel.

ReplyDeleteI'm amused that a term for it is 'doomscrolling'. My guy is hooked on the phone watching the stock market scroll by. And I hear you about the coffee. However, it is an essential purchase, right?
