One Measly Hour

What a humdinger of a cold! My sleep totalled 1 hour, which was 15 % of my 6.5 hours goal, which I think is a pretty modest goal. However, I did get 2.5 hours on the previous night. What more could a sick, old man ask for?

Sha had a day off on Monday, so she brought me lozenges and mints. Our neighbour across the street scraped the ice off our drive. We will have to thank him . . .  when we can talk. My diminished voice has Sue feeling like she is the one going deaf.

Sue is not exactly full of vim, vigour and vitality, but she’s two days farther along in this adventure, so we are making do with food and tea. She fed me an echinacea tea yesterday. I managed to get it down — most of it anyway. My main food is toast because the scratchiness feels pretty good on the throat.

Meanwhile, waste paper baskets are filling to the brim with discarded tissues, and I am dabbing my sore nose with bag balm.

That’s enough screen time for my leaky eyes. I’ll see you around.

  2. So sorry you all are hurting. It makes me aware of how we each have such different forms of difficulties.

  3. Ouch. Hope you get over the awful throat mess and don't get that horrid dry hacking uncontrollable cough.
Get well. One night while I was trying to sleep, apparently my garmin thought I'd gone hiking and said I'd walk 6 thousand steps in my sleep. Restless indeed.

  8. Sorry to hear you folks have been hit now. I was about a week in lala land. Like Sue, my ears are still wonky. Hopefully this is the only bug we get this winter eh?

  9. Oh darn cold! I've heard it's a doozy. Keep drinking that tea and eating that scratchy toast, you'll feel a little better and better each day.

  13. Oh no! AC.... I am very sorry for both you and Sue!!!!

The only things I know that can help are:

    A) Try to sleep, or at least rest/read/listen to podcasts as much as possible.

    B) Drink as much fluids as you possibly can!

Obviously though, if it does not abate reasonably soon, you MAY NOT have a viral infection and may need antibiotics.

  14. Sending my best efforts at healing vibes and sleep-inducing words. If you count sheep, the lanolin might help the nose. Um, sorry. Hope you are both better soon.

  15. I swear by zinc lozenges - they seem to fight a virus and shorten the length of colds. They are available at Shopper's, etc. You poor kids!

  16. I'm real sorry to hear about you both getting sick. I'll have to remember the zinc lozenges. I also fix a cup of hot water with lemon juice, ginger and honey, stir it all up in amounts to taste and drink when it has cooled some. My dear old dad would have put in a tot of whisky but don't know how you feel about that. I find without is good. I don't know for a fact that it works on the cold/flu but it is very comforting and can't hurt. Hope you are both 100 percent soon and also hope you get that sleep you need.

  17. You have to be having us on when you say you’re enjoying the scratchiness of toast on your sore throat. Try a soft boiled dippy egg with the toast cut into ‘soldiers’

Denise has made the same suggestion I was going to make - honey & lemon juice (fresh if you can get it - out of one of those little bottles if not) in hot water (plus paracetamol if needed for aches/pains/fever). It’s soothing on the throat and slides down quite nicely.
I haven’t heard of echinacea tea but we use them in ‘tablet’ form. Zinc supplements will help as well
Try sleeping propped up rather than flat…...or just resting your eyes.
