Quite a NIght

Good Morning.

It’s 5:40am, and here I am, calm in my chair after a weird and scary night.

The night involved falling, calling paramedics, taking an ambulance to the hospital, and some time in ER.

I got up ~2:30 to unowat. I was blazing hot on a very cold night. Then, I couldn’t get myself back to the bed. After falling onto the bathroom counter more than once, I somehow made it out the bathroom door and to the bedroom door. At that point, I was hanging on the wall, knowing that I couldn’t go any farther without falling.

I woke Sue, and when she tried to put a chair behind me, I fell over. I lay on the floor, knowing that it would be futile to try to get up.

Sue called 911. They came. BP and all was fine. I was coherent and able to answer all of their questions. I was able to eventually get downstairs to the ambulance for the very short ride to the hospital.

The tested me: BP, heart rate, EKG and so on and so forth. All was good.

The doctor said this kind of episode does happen. People get up in the night, perhaps strain to uriinate, blood pressure drops, and they keel over

So all was well, but they decided to check my urine before sending me home. It turns out that I have a urinary infection. They started me on meds and gave me a prescription to fill later this morning.

I was just in my pjs, so I can tell you that my teeth were almost chattering on the ride home as a result of the temperature going down to 7C/45F. The hot spell had just ended, and a cold front had rolled in.

I was home not much longer 2 hours after it all began. I plopped myself in my chair, and here I remain.

Sue brought me toast, and I am doing well enough, but I still don’t feel rock solid.

  2. That does sound frightening. The symptoms you described sound like a mini-stroke, although presumably the hospital checked for that. I hope it doesn't recur.

  4. UTIs have strange ways of presenting themselves. Fever is one of- confusion another.
So, take the tablets and drink loads of water…..you’ll be as right as rain in a few days (hopefully)

  5. Oh, AC. Such a scary event. So glad to hear all turned out ok, though cold. Take it easy and lets the meds do the work.

  6. Egads! I can't imagine it fun to have "fallin' and can't get up" like in those Life Alert commercials of old. I'm thankful that it wasn't due to anything serious. Get well my Canadian friend.

  8. That was a scary time, and I'm glad you're doing better now. UTIs in older people can look weird, so I'm glad they thought to check.

  9. Geese! So you went topsy turvy and it must not have been a pleasant experience...wow! Sorry you weren't wrapped in a blanket for the cold weather! Wow, cold! I'm also on antibiotics...ain't we got fun. I dream of alcohol or mood changing drugs (from memories of old). And take the football pills twice a day. It doesn't do any magic that I can feel yet! But I do hope you are feeling better with your feet under you soon. Right now!

  10. That's pretty fast service for the ER but what an awful night. It's scary when that happens and you don't know what's wrong. I'm glad you went to the ER and they have you on meds. Hopefully they kick in fast.

  11. Oh, no! I am glad you're safe and sound at home. It is scary how quickly things can go downhill, isn't it?

  12. That was a scary night indeed. It may take a few hours until you feel a bit better. Be well.

  13. This would be terrifying. You were in and out of ER quickly.

  14. Oh no, that's unsettling. *I'm impressed it was 2 hours. I'm glad there was a solution, still the whole thing was scary. Take it easy today!

  15. OMG John that was indeed terrifying. UTI's are no light inconvenience when we reach a certain age. They are very often misdiagnosed as acute onset dementia in very elderly folks. Happened with our loved one.

  17. Wow. Scary. But good information for those of us who could experience this. Relieved it ended as it did.

  18. That would be frightening but I'm glad all is well and you weren't damaged by the fall. I imagine Sue was very worried also! A nap might be called for today.

  19. AC, I am so sorry!!!!!! I am hoping that you feel fine and comfortable walking now.

Besides the UTI, perhaps you were also somewhat dehydrated?!? That can exacerbate blood pressure drops when you first awake. It takes the body a bit to acclimate from the horizontal position to the vertical in terms of blood pressure.

Stay safe.... I am hoping the UTI is not any sort of indication of your prior surgical intervention not being fully effective!!!!!!

  21. Ditto Cathy's advice above. Glad you called for "lift assist" and went to the ER to get checked out. In his 40s, my brother went to the bathroom, tinkled, and fell over due to vasovagal response from straining to tinkle. Jeepers guys! I had several patients, both genders, with unknown UTIs. Meds fixed their symptoms. Rest; drink water, move slowly. Linda in Kansas

  28. Good grief, AC! That had to be scary as all get out. I am so glad that you didnt seriously hurt yourself. And you have been doing so well lately.

  29. That would be a scary episode. I'm glad that it turned out to be not too serious.

  30. Yow, AC. As soon as you said you were cold on a hot night, I knew you had a fever. UTI's really wreak havoc on the (dare I say it?) Er...um...shall we say "the mature population". *runs away*

Seriously. Very glad you did not injure yourself in the fall. You must have scared the wits out of Sue.

  31. Just read this. [Busy day so missed reading blogs until now.] Looks like you has quite a night but thankfully no breaks or injuries. Take care and sleep well tonight. Hopefully you're reading this tomorrow morning after a much better night's rest.

  32. Wow, absolutely terrifying. I'm so glad you're okay and that everything checked out. It’s amazing how a seemingly simple thing like a urinary infection can cause such a scary and dramatic episode. It’s a good reminder to always listen to your body, even when you think you're fine. Get some rest and take it easy today.

  33. Blog reading has fallen by the wayside the past couple of weeks due to the selfish excuse of being on another adventure. That said, today was a catching up day and shat a scary experience, AC. Thank you for sharing because I am sure many of us would not have known that a urinary infection could have been the cause. Glad you are home and recovering.
