For years, we've often had one in the house, usually red. I often consume a few strips during lunch.
I have noticed that we could purchase small bags of peppers, perhaps with 1 red, 1 yellow, and 1 orange.
But at the rate that I consume them, what would I possibly want with three peppers?
One day, Sue noticed that she could purchase one of these bags quite cheaply and get 3 for 1 as it were.
So, she did just that.
The sweetness was remarkable: so much better than the single peppers from the bin.
I wasn't mistaken, for the next single pepper that I purchased tasted less sweet once again. Following that, we purchased another bag of three, and it was also much sweeter, just like the first.

What is up with that? Has anyone else noticed this? Whatever the case, I shall forevermore purchase peppers in the bag if I am given the option.
Interesting. I shall have to conduct my own research now!
ReplyDeleteI get those peppers too and I love them. I don't know about the taste test but I eat whole peppers for a snack or fill them with tuna salad. As long as they are raw, I love them!
ReplyDeleteI buy the three in a bag all the time. Haven't noticed the sweetness though but then I usually cook with them and rarely eat them raw.
ReplyDeleteInteresting observation. I don't know if you have the same thing up there but down here, we can buy a bag of what I call sweet peppers. They come in the three colors, orange, yellow and red but are about 1/4th the size or maybe a bit smaller than that of a traditional bell pepper. They are always much sweeter than the bell varieties and we eat them a lot especially in the summer on our salads. FWIW, we also have the three bell pepper bags too but I guess I haven't noticed the sweetness difference before.
ReplyDeleteProbably because they are some sort of hybrid, making them smaller and also sweeter. Just a guess.
ReplyDeleteLike Ed, I buy a bag of the smaller peppers. They are sweet, and last a nice long time. The yellow and orange are my favorite tho - I shy away from the red.
ReplyDeleteI don't like peppers, but they sure are pretty! My older two grandsons love peppers and eat them like candy.
ReplyDeleteMaybe they're ripening in the bag. I don't like the metallic taste I get from any color of pepper, so you can have my share.
ReplyDeleteI always buy the bag of peppers and find that they last a long time. I haven't noticed about the sweetness though.
ReplyDeleteI love the sweet peppers.
ReplyDeleteIt’s fascinating how those mixed packs seem consistently sweeter
ReplyDeleteMaybe the companionship of fellow peppers makes them feel peppier and more sweet-natured?
ReplyDeleteI have never taste tested them!
ReplyDeleteI have noticed that! And I agree with @infidel753 - maybe they're all making friends in the bag and spreading the sweetness? And @Jeanie - fill them with tuna! Yes! Next lunch - check.
ReplyDeleteThat's interesting. I hardly ever see bags of peppers here, they are usually individual and you pick a few of them from the bin.
ReplyDeleteIsn't it great that life always affords us more to discover?
ReplyDeleteIt is fascinating how much the flavor can vary between the peppers in the bag and those from the bin. I have noticed that the smaller, multi colored peppers often pack a much sweeter punch for snacking. Your discovery will certainly help others pick the best produce during their next grocery trip.
ReplyDeleteThe 3 in a bag are weekly purchase for me. I do love bell peppers!
ReplyDeleteI guess that i have never noticed any difference. I usually have my peppers cooked, so perhaps that is why.
ReplyDeleteThe peppers in the bag are picked later that the ones sold to stores singly. There for they are sweeter.
ReplyDeleteAn interesting post!
ReplyDeleteGoodness. I will have to try this. Thanks for the tip.
