The Coldest Day

It was the coldest day of winter although it isn't technically winter yet. I woke up to Alexa telling me that it was -22C out there, which makes it about -8F for that single country that can't quite manage metric.

But let us begin with the previous evening which wasn't very cold when I shovelled up the lights snow from the driveway. While the contractor did plow overnight, we always try to shovel by the garage door first because neither he nor we want the huge plow to go crashing into the house.

Late the next morning, we bundled up and headed to Riverside Park. The cold wasn't as terrible as you might think because it was sunny and calm out there. It's the wind that really penetrates, but straight cold can be endured up to a point.

The river was pretty well frozen over. Even the darker spots in the photos were mostly frozen but just not snow-covered.

As you know by now, I am forever drawn to the birches across the river. You can see them in the previous photo, but I zoomed in from the same spot for this photo.

The town does not plow the paths in the park, so there will come a time, possibly soon, when they will become too deep in snow to tread easily. The other likelihood is that thawing and freezing will make the footing treacherous. However, we were able to trudge through comfortably on this day.

It was rather an invigorating walk on a good day to be alive.

  1. Hey, we have company with Liberia and Myanmar! When I was younger, I was all gung-ho for converting to metric. Now I see why my father and grandfather didn't want to convert. They and I now, just want to live out my remaining years without having to learn a new system of units. I guess that means that there won't be any hope for the three of us.

  2. Glad the wind wasn't up...look at all the tracks...and metrics just isn't high on my to do list. When I see 32c I know that's almost 90f. I know pretty well, where to go from there. Stay warm!

  3. I think there were plans to convert years ago. Obviously it didn't happen. I handle the cold better than heat.

  4. Beauty of the river and snow, so glad you were able to walk and enjoy the fresh clean air and sunshine. I stared at a mathematical formula on my refrigerator door about converting C to F or the other way (it tells me centimeters to inches etc.) Goddess knows the methods are beyond me...so I'm glad to find the actual numbers already given.

  5. We woke to -9º this morning. Heater was going off and on last night a lot. No plans to go out today.

  6. It's the cold wind that's always the killer, but a calm, sunny, cold day is beautiful.

  7. Brrrrrr! I can't say I've experienced cold like that. I'll still agree with you that it's the wind that's the real deal breaker to going out. The birch trees are lovely, oh that white bark. Your crisp walk in the sun sounds life affirming!

  8. Yesterday here in Montreal it was sunny and very cold 🥶 It is always colder when it is sunny 🌞 than when it snows. The temperature is rising now as we are going to be getting snow ❄️
    Your photos are beautiful.

  9. That's very cold! Brrr. I don't have appropriate clothing but would if I were lucky enough to be Canadian. I would love to switch to metric. I thought we were going to at one point.
