Point Form: From Shorts to Afghans
- I came across a new term from Jenn at Crumbly Acres: Shoulder Season. I'd never heard that term, but it speaks to the reality that although the days warm up nicely, the nights also cool down. There's more to it, below.
It's called shoulder season because spring and fall act as the "shoulders" on either side of the "head" or peak season (summer or winter), referring to a period of lower travel demand situated between high and low demand periods. The term also suggests the milder weather in these transitional months, when one might wear just a light jacket over their shoulders.
- As soon as I got into the car to head to the store, my sunglasses fell apart. I headed off regardless, but immediately and forthwith, the rearview camera monitor fell off the dashboard. It's not as traumatic as it seems because it is a freestanding add-on to our old Honda and not set in the dashboard. I was able to secure it back in place once I arrived at the grocery store. However, one has to wonder if this falling apartedness is somehow a a portent.
- In the grocery store, I purchased cat food, which is not unusual. What was unusual was the purchase of dry cat food from there. For more than 6 years, I have been purchasing a certain dry food from a certain pet store. But Lacey recently stopped eating that not-inexpensive item. Go figure.
- In the grocery store, I became a typically miffed old codger because they had changed the order of things. They do it just to torment us, you know. Not only that, but they have stopped stocking the specific mouthwash that we use. Life is hard. Thoughts and prayers please.
- Some of you wish to see inside the Wool Growers Coop, and in the fulness of time ye shall. But you may be disappointed. Primarily, what you will see will be hundreds of bales of wool all wrapped and packaged for shipping. Still, it is interesting enough in there, and I shall comply with your wishes . . . when the spirit moves.
- Speaking of wool, I've been asked if the recent picture of Sue crocheting was current or from last year. Indeed, it is current. And since you have expressed curiosity about this new project, I shall show you what I can at some point, maybe even tomorrow.
- What else? Oh yes, a dear reader has mentioned that she can knit but not crochet. With Sue it is more or less opposite. It is also true, that to a large degree she has taught herself how to crochet by following step-by-step, video tutorials for making her last half dozen or so afghans. This particular kit, she ordered from Mary Maxim, and she has become adept enough to follow the pattern sans tutorial. She's clever that way. I know that you all wonder what a clever woman is doing with the likes of AC. It's a mystery, I tells ya.
Wonderful post. Yes, things change at the store so people will wander around a bit more...that's what I think.
ReplyDeleteWith the big change in one of our stores this past year, so many people were angry and confused.
Especially when they found food products changed or not stocked anymore.
I'm a bit surprised at today's post. No photos. No photos from AC? I fear for the stability of the universe. But since it's Mabon (aka Autumn Equinox) I will consider this just a pinpoint of moment when the earth doesn't tilt differently, but moves smoothly in it's path around the sun. I used to think the earth wobbled until a certain Mr. AC convinced me (at quite an advanced age, I might add) otherwise.
ReplyDeleteMy immediate thought on seeing 'shoulder season' was that it was the time of year to be covering one's shoulders. (I'm very literal!)
ReplyDeleteThey do change their layouts just to annoy us, don't they? And their packaging. So when I want my regular brand I have to browse to find it. Huh!
ReplyDeleteI think they change store layout to make people pass products they don't usually see and maybe they'll buy them. You'd think they'd have caught on that it only annoys people and drives them away. I shop online so I'm only annoyed when they "improve" the website.
ReplyDeleteOne of the worst sightes in the world is walking into my local grocery store and seeing them in the midst of rearranging the shelves.
ReplyDeleteHere’s another oldie who gets annoyed when the supermarket layout changes. Most places are a shambles at the moment because finding room for the Big C items means cutting shelf space for other stuff.
ReplyDeleteI laughed recently when a ‘staff member’ asked me if I’d seen where an item was…..even they get confused.
I had heard shoulder season in terms of travel (it's when I try to go if going to a city where it might be more crowded -- and is usually less expensive) but not in terms of wardrobe. Makes sense, though. I had that store layout/lack of favorite product issue yesterday in Costco. They moved the nuts and don't carry one of the crackers I like anymore. Ugh!
ReplyDeleteYou have all my thoughts and prayers. It is a hard world. It's impressive that Sue taught herself to crochet.
ReplyDeleteSurely our Sue is as smitten by you as you obviously are with her!
ReplyDeleteLove this post! It's whimsical. I show my age too when I rant about the grocery store changing the location of items or even worse, discontinuing them! I like the shoulder seasons better than summer and winter.
ReplyDeleteA fun post.I would like to know who organizes the layouts for grocery stores since they often don't make any sense.
ReplyDeleteThe stores change things to confuse us. LOL!!!
ReplyDeleteOk. Everyone gets annoyed at new layouts in the grocery store. The one I visit had a total makeover. I had to try to reorient my grocery shopping list but still don't have it correct. It's management trying to justify their jobs by coming up with new plans to encourage sales.
ReplyDeleteOh, everyone agrees that the stores shouldn't move things around! And all the displays they should get rid of as well, causing traffic flow problems.
ReplyDeleteAt this age we are creatures of habit so don't move stuff on us.
ReplyDeleteThought and prayers. I;'m fighting my growing curmugeoness--trying to keep those thoughts to myself before I find myself yelling at strangers--or, worse, at friends.
ReplyDeleteCats are fussy creatures. There is nothing much more annoying that going to your usual shop and finding that all has been re-arranged. A pet peeve of mine.
ReplyDeleteOur Costco recently changed their layout and that is a horrible place to do that because it is so huge. There is no easy way to relocate missing things, it involves a huge trek. It's taken us weeks to find the Diet Coke. Right by the alcohol! Why in the world?
ReplyDeleteAnd my daughter is a self taught crochet-er as well! She made herself a sweater with no pattern! She didn't get that from me. Must be a recessive gene somewhere.
I've taken to mail ordering things my local stores "hide" from me or no longer carry.
