Danica's First Post

There was a funny incident at the kids' house over the weekend. I told Danica, if she wrote about it, I would publish it on my blog. She wrote what is below all on her own. She will be going into grade three in September.

THE STORY OF THE CAT AND THE ALIVE CHIPMUNK

Written by John's Granddaughter Danica

So, it all started off on a bright, sunny day in August. We had three people over, Callum, Brenna, and their mom, Erin. Erin came out of the bathroom and said: "Uh there's a situation with your cat." Our cat Abby was carrying not a toy, BUT AN ALIVE CHIPMUNK! In the room was my dad: Trying to knock out the chipmunk. The Chipmunk: Speeding around my dad's room. And lastly, Abby: Chasing the chipmunk. The chipmunk and Abby bumped into each other. And Abby then acted like, Eh you go get it dad. I don't care. So, Erin, Callum and Brenna left. Abby is now out of the room. Me, JJ, and my dad teamed up. After a few minutes of directing directions, and trying to catch and knock the chipmunk out, JJ caught it with a green bucket. Then, when we got on the floor wondering what to do with it. We heard a weird noise. It was the chipmunk trying to make a hole to get out! Then, my dad said, "Can you put some pressure on this?'' (That wasn't all he said. But what ever.) Then, I said ''What kind of pressure?'' My dad said ''Put your hands on it". After one to two mins., my brother had to go to the washroom. So it was only me. A little bit later, my dad and brother came in with a piece of card board. We put it under the bucket. My dad opened his window and put the screen out and put it on his bed. He dumped the chipmunk out of the window on to our grass in our backyard. Then we celebrated our team work.

THE END!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe the lucky chippy will write about his exciting escape from the jaws of disaster on his chipmunk blog.

I was impressed that she didn't ask for help with spelling or punctuation. She just sat down at the computer and wrote this story. No help from us at all. I know I couldn't have done that when I was 8!

Great story and wonderful descriptive words, Danica. I'm very proud of you!
P.S. I'm so glad the chipmunk was let go to freedom after its harrowing ordeal. Teamwork gets things done!

Great writing and I was able to see in my mind's eye what you and your family went through trying to catch the chipmunk. I thought it funny, but then I wasn't involved. Can't believe what a wonderful story teller you are, you are so lucky to have such a great family. I have enjoyed reading about you since you were a baby and to see you growing up to be such a kind and smart girl is totally amazing. Sending you big hugs and looking forward to your guest appearances. xo

Danica--maybe somewhere there is a chipmunk writing his story...you won't believe what happened to me today.

Several years ago, we had a similar escapade. We had three cats--and they were only allowed outside in a small fenced-in yard. But, one day, the biggest cat came to the window to be let back in--and he was carrying something. I thought it was dead, so I let the cat in. It was a chipmunk--and SURPRISE it was still alive. As soon as the cat dropped it, the chipmunk took off, looking for a way out. Our three cats were THRILLED--new game, something to chase. After awhile, I caught the chipmunk, put it outside and away it scrambled.

Hmmm--I wonder if your chipmunk is a relative to my chipmunk.

That is a really fun story, Danica. Imagine how scared that chipmunk must have been!

It reminds me of one time when I was moving into a new house, and we unlocked and opened the door to bring in the boxes, and a little chipmunk scampered down off of a tree, and into the house! Then he stood on the door jamb, staring at us and chattering, as if scolding us: "This is my house! You'd better leave!"

He changed his mind pretty quickly and ran away when we started carrying the boxes in, but let me tell you, that was one bold chipmunk!

What a riveting story, Danica! I'm so impressed with how everyone worked together to get the chipmunk back outside. I'm also glad to hear the chipmunk was alive. I wonder what he was thinking while you were all trying to help him? I'm also glad that JJ was able to go to the washroom. I hope he had a really good pee.

Thank you for sharing this wonderful story. I think you should start your own blog soon.

Love,

Auntie Alycia xoxo

Great job Danica! I was a little worried for that chipmunk at first because I thought he might not feel very good after being knocked out. But through your team effort the story has a happy ending!
