Cottage Panes

My confession is that I am much too wimpish to get out for morning photos in the winter. I would rather get up at 5AM or even earlier in summer than go out at 8 o'clock in winter. This was especially true during our time at the cottage when temperatures sometimes hovered around -35° on both scales. But the cottage does have windows, and AC does have a camera. And so, I present Cottage Panes.

I guess this ↓↓ is my fave of the lot, for the framing, beautiful sunrise with the magentas, and how the processing turned out. I actually hadn't been aware of what was going on, but Sue spotted the glorious light when she got up. I was lucky to get the shot as it clouded over in remarkably quick fashion.

Through the same window (over the stove) on another colder morning when it was totally frosted over. ↓↓

But wait . . . there's more. This is an HDR from 4 or 5 exposures if I recall correctly. It's not that one needs to do HDRs much anymore to capture the tonal range, but it still comes in handy from time to time. Besides, I like to not give up my HDRing skills, such as they are, without a battle. ↓↓

I often get up too darn early for my own good. One morning, I took this reflection before the sun arose. This is also an HDR. ↓↓

Those were all through or of the dining room window — or at least the window over the stove as seen from around the table. This ↓↓ is through the kitchen window over the sink. gotta love the flares from the misted portions of the window.

Finally, this ↓↓ is another early-morning reflection through the door that leads to the porch and the front steps, with my coat hanging on the hook.

I truly hope that this post does not leave you in too much pane. I guess the putrid pun might, however.

I have not learned HDR although my camera claims it can do it! I also am not a fan of HDR when it gets overdone, but your are such a nice warm tonal contrast to the cold subject matter!

I have no idea what HDR is, but it has made some very nice photos! Looks like your time at the cabin was tons of fun. It's been pretty cold hasn't it? And now it's back to the old routine. Stay Warm!

Oh wow! I love these photos! Can't choose which I liked best, but maybe #2 and 3 and the last one? The one with frost reminded me of when I lived in Finland. Never got that cold there, however.

I'm finding it a little difficult to motivate myself early in the morning too, John. But you made a beautiful set of shots around a theme from the inside! Nice work, Brother.

So what's wrong with getting up at 8 a.m., John? Absolutely nothing and we too have become regular practitioners in winter months. Of course, we are usually awake earlier, but laze in bed reading or catching up news events via iPad. And then we have something lite and head over to the local "Y." You took great pains to get these great pane shots and thanks for not standing out in the cold either.

The first photo could be in a museum somewhere. Seriously. It's breathtakingly beautiful....

Highly skilled and highly magnificent

All but the, um, pun. It was a pane.

I don't blame you for not wanting to get out in the cold to take photos. Plus, I'd worry what it would do to my camera, exposed to frigid temps, then going inside to defrost. Yikes. But you got some amazing shots right from your window!

Oh, I go out in the cold, but not early in the morning. That's too much for my old brain and body.

I'm with you about not wanting to step out there that early despite the beauty that awaits you. We face east over the lake and have a large wall of windows in the living room. That's good enough for me. Though we've not had too many sunny mornings lately. Very lovely images - one and all.

My little point and shoot's three bracket settings don't allow for any real attempt at HDR, but I always love your shots. Interesting perspective on a cold winter morning and a reminder that great photo ops are all around us.

I love them all.
The light that you captured (thanks Sue) is exactly what I see some mornings, through my study window--but I just can't capture it as I see it. Maybe I need a bigger better camera.
And I love the second photo for all its frostiness...and the third...
I could go on. And on.

Lovely series--you have an eye, AC.

I am just getting time to catch up a little. I agree with the comment that these are magazine quality. For some reaon I am particularly drawn to the last one. It is so unique! It seems perfet that the beautiful quilt is heart themed. The picture captures how good it should feel to get home. I really, really like it!
