Words of Wonder

It's a long time between kids and grandkids, so one forgets a lot about babies and toddlers — almost everything as a matter of fact. In a way that's good because it tends to bring back the sense of wonder that accompanies a firstborn. How delightful in the past week to catch the occasional word escaping from The Bonnie Wee One's lips. In each case except the third, it has been a one-shot deal, but each incident delighted this old codger to no end.

First she appeared to say "Grampa" as she stumbled toward me. Then it was "birdie" as we gazed upon robins worm-hunting in the backyard through her bedroom window. Finally, it was "truck" as Grandma made a big deal (again) over the garbage truck's weekly passing. In fact, she seemed to try that one a few times with varying degrees of success — the kid I mean not Grandma.

This is too much fun. And the bonus is that we get to go home at night to recuperate.

It IS too much fun, isn't it?

Metal pans and wooden spoons were never passed around to MY children. But for some reason, when the grandchildren bang on them it sounds absolutely beautiful!

I spent over 20 years being a doting aunt, so having my own has been a grand experience. I may have waited too long to anticipate grandchildren, but we'll worry about that when the time comes. Or if it doesn't.

funny how our brains leave us so quickly after the fact of all this amazingness! Great to hear your enthusiasm!

This is one of my favourite stages! I remember hearing Rachel say her first words but then I would second guess myself. We're at the stage now where we have to be VERY careful with what we say. I try to spell some words to Ron but God love him, he usually says the word after I spell it...as if it's a quiz and he got the answer right! :)

Speaking as an uncle who also delights in the ability to "go home", I concur.

What's even more delightful, though, is the ability to be both an observer of and participant in the growing process.

As an aside, I will be in your neck of the woods in a couple weeks - maybe we need to meet for a truly Canadian experience, Timmy's!?

It's such a lovely time when they begin to try out words. You'll have to be careful what you say as everything will be repeated in a year or so~ not that I'm suggesting you would say anything inappropriate!

I too listen and watch for the words and actions of these "grand" ones and also find them fascinating little critters. ec

I remember when you first shared that you were going to be a grandpa....I remember thinking how your world would change and what blessings and just pure, unadulterated joy would fill your life.
It's good to hear that you're recognizing it and enjoying it.

I absolutely LOVE the pictures that you share of her and you....and the memories that you all are making.
