Incongruity

I didn't have my camera or I would surely have stopped to take a picture, but I saw a sign with the following message yesterday.

Hiring Now
Volunteer Firefighters

Meanwhile, yesterday was a tough one with the little one. Whether she was teething or not, I can't say for positive, but she seems to be and was very very whiny let me tell you. On top of that, the old guy was experiencing yet another relapse day, so it was difficult for all. But we made it through. So far, today is not as problematic, but we are not quite our healthiest and sunniest selves either — neither the babes nor the grand.

What a gold nugget this blog is. I come from Australia, the land famous for volunteer firefighters.

That tulip photo is great, too.

Good on ya!

It took a while for the penny to drop. I kept looking at the words and thinking, no, they're spelled right, they're in the right order etc., and then in a blinding flash it struck me... hiring vs volunteer. Ooh, sometimes I'm so slow.
I'm sorry you're having a blah day. When I get those I just wallow and procrastinate, and I'm usually back to normal by the next day. Hope the little one's feeling a bit better. It's so upsetting when they're teething and you can see they're uncomfortable, but there isn't much you can do. Just lots of TLC.

The sign is right up there with other oxymorons--like "military intelligence" or "jumbo shrimp" etc. In fact, George Carlin the comedian does a whole routine on such contradictory sayings.

Is it unusual to have volunteer fire fighters? We regularly buy tickets/make donations to keep the volunteer brigade going. Hope things start looking up for you

You are all continually on the go so I can fully understand that you are running down a bit. Have some R&R , get your feet up, whether it be an hour or nine! You'll all be feeling (fire?)fighting fit soon.
Sorry to hear #the lod guy' is not feeling so good. A better day today eh? :o)
