At Least Grampa's Enjoying It

Hmmm ... I seem to be flooding this blog with Smudge pics lately. So what's another between friends?

She's doesn't seem to be totally secure and happy up there on my shoulder, but I think she's trying to like it. I remember carrying her mother around like this. She loved it, but I may be recalling times when she was a bit older. Her mother always liked being tossed and bounced about, but as we discovered with Thesha's sister, Althegal, not all babies are quite so keen.

I don't quite know how to describe grandparental love, not even almost ten months into the role. It's not exactly the same as parental love. I'm one step removed, which is how it should be, but I experience a warm pleasure at what I watch unfold. Perhaps, I actually feel more sheer delight in both observing and partaking.

You seem so marvelously captivated by your granddaughter and grandparent-hood in general. I, on the other hand, am not looking forward to that day for myself. Perhaps it's because I have such a spread in the ages of my children. I fear I'll never be child free!

(Hmmm. This could be a good jumping off point for a blog post of my own!)

I had no idea of the kind of love grandchildren produce - it totally gobsmacked me.

I have fallen behind on reading my favorite blogs, love all the pictures of the Smudge. Not so much the snow.

This love between grandparent and grandchild... there's a freedom to it that lets you be a child again. A very good thing for the grandparents.

Give her a few more months and I bet she will love all the bouncing and swinging etc. You'll probably get tired before she does then!!

Don't threaten to let her fall for you have no hair for her to hang on to.

Enjoy her while you can still lift her and she will let you. The day will come when neither can happen.

When I was growing up and living at home my dad was not someone I really 'knew' very well. I knew he got up early and got home late and I knew that on a Sunday afternoon we had to be quiet. It's different now, he is my best friend and we share so much time. However as Grandad he is pretty fantastic. He gives time freely and always has them at the forefront of his mind. He knows them inside out, likes, dislikes etc... Like you said though, he doesn't ever try to be a parent but I do sometimes feel a little envious of the time he gives my two (his only grandchildren) and the time he gave me when I was younger... of course I am able to put mature thought behind it and so I do understand how things were different then.
Keep the pics coming! :o)

I think little Smudge looks quite comfy and at home on your shoulders.. resting her little hand on your head. :-)

Is there anything better than being a grandparent.. I think not. :-)
